Charlene's obituary
Charlene Ferris, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully May 1, 2026, leaving behind a loving family who will miss her dearly.
Charlene was born on October 15, 1930, in Springfield, Missouri. She had one younger sister, Rose (Schuchardt) who passed away at age 31. She grew up in Springfield during her early childhood and moved to St. Louis during her high school years. She graduated from Bayless High School in St. Louis. She met her husband, Hugh Ferris, in St. Louis and they were married July 11, 1953. They had two children, Sue (Mike) and Mike (Sharleen). She was known as “Nana” to her three grandchildren, Logan Hiatt (Ryan), and Mitchell and Caroline Ferris. She was a recent great grandmother to Harper Hiatt who was born January of this year.
After her husband Hugh passed away on July 12, 2003, she lived independently on her own until she moved to HarborChase of Mandarin, an assisted living facility, in June 2022. She was fiercely independent until the end of her life.
Charlene loved music. Her husband, Hugh, was a musician when they met. He played the saxophone. They both shared a love of music, particularly jazz music. They had favorite albums they played often and enjoyed going to the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
In her later years, she was an avid lover of crossword puzzles and loved to read. She also loved watching game shows, especially Jeopardy. She enjoyed the activities at HarborChase, playing games, art classes and the twice a weekly live music show.
We will be forever grateful to the wonderful caring staff at HarborChase who helped mom during her final days.
She will be buried with her husband at Jacksonville National Cemetery. She was a breast cancer survivor in her early 70’s. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to charities focused on breast cancer research.
