In Loving Memory of Charlene Delores Wallace
Charlene Delores (Carr) Wallace, 89, of Detroit, MI, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025. Born on December 11, 1935, in Caruthersville, MO, to Robert Lawrence and Josephine “Babe” Helen (Gilmore) Carr. Charlene was the second of ten siblings.
The family moved to Benton Harbor, where Charlene attended Benton Harbor High School, excelling academically and earning an all-state basketball title. She married Floyd I. Wallace in 1953, and together they raised two children, Floyd E. Wallace and Catherine Wallace-Freeman. After her father's passing in 1959, Charlene and Floyd welcomed her four youngest siblings into their home, raising them alongside their children.
Charlene was known for her unwavering devotion to family, her exceptional cooking, and her candid, fearless spirit. She was an avid bowler for over 30 years, winning numerous local, state, and national tournaments, and proudly purchased a 1966 Blue Mustang with her winnings.
Charlene was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lawrence and Josephine (Babe) Helen Gilmore; her siblings Percy, Emma Jean, and David; and her former husband, Floyd I.
She is survived by her loving children, Floyd E. and Catherine; grandchildren, Kali, Isis, Bakari, Akilah, and Ebony; great-grandchildren, Jamel, Tariq, and Jayce; and siblings Fred, Richard, Robert (LaFrancine), Janie (Dennis), Stanley (Deshawn), and Daniel.
She also leaves behind her daughter-in-love, Gloria, son-in-love, Emery (Babatunji), beloved nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
