It was not long ago that I embarked on my journey in medical school, where fate intertwined my path with that of Chandrakant, a dedicated student in his final year of MBBS at Ahmedabad's BJ Medical College. Our shared passion for cricket ignited a beautiful friendship, beginning in 1956, as we ventured forth into a world filled with dreams and camaraderie.
Together, we soared to the finals of the inter-medical cricket competition in the erstwhile Bombay state, just before its division into Gujarat and Maharashtra. In a spirited match against the GMC of Bombay in Poona, our bond deepened, with Chandrakant stepping forward as the Cricket Secretary, orchestrating our journey with enthusiasm and serving as a vibrant cheerleader. He mastered the art of uplifting others, and through teamwork, we basked in the glory of our victory, creating memories filled with joy and pride.
Time passed, and though we lost touch, our fates converged once more in Massachusetts. Our friendships blossomed anew, intertwining with the fabric of our families and professions. Naliniben and Kokila became cherished companions, enriching our lives with their warmth. Together, the four of us immersed ourselves in social, political, and professional gatherings, nurturing a community that felt like an extended family, bound by shared experiences and aspirations.
One of the most remarkable qualities of my dear friend Chandrakant was his unwavering generosity—the art of giving with a smile and pride that truly embodied the essence of a Saatvik soul, reminiscent of the teachings of Lord Krishna in the Gita. As captured in Bhgavad Gita Chapter 17.20:
दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे | देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् || 20||
"Charity given to a worthy person simply because it is right to give, without consideration of anything in return, at the proper time and in the proper place, is stated to be in the mode of goodness."
Chandrakant's life stands as an inspiring testament to the idea that there exists something greater than ourselves. He taught us to embrace love, honor, and respect for others without expectation, forging connections that transcend the ordinary.
As we cherish the memories of families, friends, and him, we recognize that his spirit will forever guide us. “There is something to life—Equanimity and oneness.” Let us take a moment to thank that spirit, celebrating the profound impact he has left on our hearts, and carry forward the legacy of kindness and unity that he embodied.
