Cedric's obituary
Dr. Cedric Lester Gutierrez Magaway, M.D, a resident of Old Bridge, NJ, at 30 years old, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital surrounded by his closest family and friends.
Born Sunday, December 6, 1992, in Quezon City, Philippines, Cedric was the son of Ricardo and Luz Magaway.
In 1993, the Magaway family would immigrate to the United States, and settle in Old Bridge Township of New Jersey. Cedric graduated from Old Bridge High School where he was an honor student, ranked in the top 10 of his class, playing multiple sports, including volleyball, cross country, and indoor track, and was an avid trumpet player in the band. In 2011, he would continue his studies as an undergraduate in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences. During his time here, Cedric was the president of the Filipino student association, as well as president of the Cornell Pre-Med Honors Society. After graduating in May 2015, he dedicated his time to working in healthcare, first as a medical scribe in the Emergency Department at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, followed by becoming a Public Health Americorps Volunteer at the Zufall Health Community Center at Morristown, NJ. Afterward in August 2017, he pursued graduate studies at Rutgers University, at the top of his class, receiving a Masters of Biological Sciences. Cedric moved forward to pursue a career as a physician, entering Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in August 2018. During his time in medical school, he developed a strong passion in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), subsequently pursuing his interests via working closely with Dr. Gerard A. Malanga, MD, at New Jersey Sports Medicine, LLC and New Jersey Regenerative Institute in Cedar Knolls, NJ. His commitment to the field was recognized as he was awarded the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation RWJMS scholarship in his fourth year of medical school. Cedric went on to successfully match into both an internal medicine preliminary year at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and a PM&R residency at JFK University Hospital. With resilience and perseverance, Cedric graduated medical school in May 2022.
In his free time, Cedric loved being active, enjoying the outdoors, practicing photography, making coffee, and spending quality time with his friends and family. He always liked going hiking, playing volleyball, and cooking for everyone. He was also an avid traveler to National Parks, making it to Shenandoah, Acadia, the Grand Canyon, and Utah's Mighty 5 Parks.
Cedric was known for his gentle nature, compassion and generosity. He held himself with a quiet confidence, with one of his greatest strengths being an empathetic, patient listener to anyone he met. His compassion for others was contagious, always showing big and small acts of kindness to others. He will be sincerely missed by all those that are blessed to have had him in their lives.
Cedric is survived by his loving partner and best friend, Allison Liang, by his beloved parents, Ricardo and Luz, and by his caring brother, Carlo, along with his loving extended family and friends.
