Kay's obituary

In Memory of Catherine Johnson

Age 92

December 10, 1930 - June 30, 2023

With hearts heavy but filled with cherished memories, we announce the passing of Catherine Johnson, affectionately known as Kay. She left this world peacefully at her Lynnwood home, following a short illness June 30, 2023.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Lena (Diephuis) Verhage, and her siblings Perry Verhage, Fran Bratt, and Jean Riseng. She is survived by her children Mark (Marianne) Johnson and Robert (Diana) Johnson, and her grandchildren Ruby, Kevin, Kelly, and Lauren. Among her surviving siblings are Anna Collins and Marlene (Paul) DeVries, along with many nieces and nephews. Kay will be remembered fondly by her husband of 63 years, Robert (Bob) Johnson.

Kay graduated from Calvin College in the 1950s and went on to teach in various Christian schools in Holland, Michigan, Ontario, California, and Denver, Colorado, where she met her husband, Bob. The Johnson family relocated to Lynwood, Washington in 1965 where Kay worked as an educator at Watson Groen Christian School.

Kay enjoyed her time in the Pacific Northwest, finding solace in the mountains there and along the shores of Lake Michigan. Her passions included reading, gardening, caring for young children, and leisurely walks. She had a special fondness for her cherished rose garden, where she nurtured each bloom with love and care.

A memorial service to celebrate Kay's life will be held at Lynnwood Orthodox Presbyterian Church at 11 AM on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

We look forward to seeing her again when all things will be made new and God will dwell with God's people. Until then, Kay's memory will remain a source of comfort and reflection in our hearts.
