Carroll's obituary

Carroll Lee Zensius, 78, of Greenville, CA passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on March 3, 2023, in Modesto, CA. Born on February 26, 1945, in Oroville, CA, to Richard and Betty Crail, Carroll was a graduate of El Cerrito High School (‘62.) She met and married Marvin Evangelho in Pinole, CA in 1962; the couple had two daughters: Deneen, 1963, and Dee Anne (Devi), 1965.

In 1969 Carroll married Wayne Zensius and lived in Fremont, CA where they raised Deneen and Devi. Carroll’s passion for life was shared through being of service in community activities such as PTA, 4H, and square dancing.  Wayne and Carroll purchased a vintage carousel and spent many years refurbishing the horses and animals for resale. Her love of photography grew during this time. In 1983 Wayne and Carroll divorced and maintained a friendship throughout the years.

Carroll loved to travel. She organized tours and extensive trips to China, Hong Kong, and Korea, and traveled personally to Australia, Africa, Europe, and Thailand.  In 1988 Carroll and Andrew Urban opened Net Tours in San Francisco on Powell Street for 7 years. During her travel adventures, Carroll took lots of beautiful photographs.

In 2007 she moved to Greenville from Vallejo, CA. She fell in love with the mountains and became an enthusiastic member of the community,  participating in Easter egg hunts, Thanksgiving celebrations, and Gold-digger Days, and volunteered at the local thrift store. She managed the Sierra Lodge on Main St. for many years before buying her own home.  She loved working in her garden and canning her seasonal bounty.  She was an avid San Francisco Giants fan and enjoyed attending live games with her daughter and grandchildren.  After she lost her home in the Dixie Fire in Greenville in 2021, Carroll spent time living in Biggs and Quincy, CA, to be near her brother, Don, Deneen, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.

Carroll is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Betty Crail, and her favorite fur baby, Chuck, and survived by her two daughters, Deneen Evangelho Santos and Devi Kaur Evangelho; granddaughters, Danielle Santos and Mareesa Santos; great-grandson, Emmett Santos; brothers, Don Crail and Dennis Crail; her newest fur baby, Punk; as well as many extended family members and friends.

Services will be held virtually and in person at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your favorite charity.
