Marina Andrews
1988, Kyiv, Ukraine (then still part of the USSR)
Carolyn and I met during the '88 Peace Child tour that started in Kyiv, Ukraine, and ended in Odessa and Crimea, Ukraine (all of which were then still part of the Soviet Union). I believe this was one of the first such tours happening outside of Moscow and/or, possibly, other large cities in Russia. Carolyn was one of the "American kids" (who had to travel by train from Moscow to Kyiv, since there were no direct flights at that time), and I was one of the "Soviet kids" who met the American kids at the train station in Kyiv. It was an epic meeting that created lifelong friendships. Carolyn was a beautiful, warm, caring, talented, and very driven, in the best sense of the word, young woman who wanted to make the world a better place. And she did, in her own way! She was a force of nature!!! Carolyn and I stayed in touch after the tour by writing old-fashioned snail mail letters, which I keep and cherish to this day. Then, after losing touch for a while, we reconnected thanks to FB and other PC '88 friends. I was overjoyed to celebrate Carolyn's accomplishments and devastated to hear her health news. If anyone could beat the cancer, she would have been the one. Carolyn gave it her absolute best... May Carolyn's memory be for a blessing! My thoughts are with Carolyn's family and especially her son in these difficult times. There is another angel in the Heavens.
