Background
On May 2nd my beloved Caroline suffered a heart attack. Her indomitable spirit, exceptional medical care, and the extraordinary outpouring of support and energy from the many people who loved her kept her alive for over a week, but ultimately her body was not able to recover. On May 13th, surrounded by her family and loved ones, she passed into the heavens. She was at peace when she went and told us all that she could feel the beauty and light of where she was headed.
Her loss is a pain that I have never experienced before. For the past 28 years it has been Paige and Caroline. I don’t know how to be Paige without her. I know if you spoke with her she made you promise to keep an eye on me. She was the light and I was the dark. She was chatty and I was not. She loved people, me not so much. She wanted me to continue living even though right now it seems impossible. So, I am going to try and honor her wishes by reaching out and by celebrating her life.
She asked that in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations be made toward helping pay the hospital bills and the funeral cost. Contributions will first and foremost be put towards those ends.
We used to joke that everywhere we went I was going to put a bench in her memory. I have every intention of fulfilling that dream and any remaining funds will be directed towards a first memorial bench in the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. (Then we will move down the list.)
I also have plans to publish her plays and make her songs accessible. I will not let her light fade, her art, her faith was too important to her.
Thank you for helping me celebrate the most amazing woman I ever met. If you have a favorite memory or story (where I’m sure her very unique laugh plays a part) I would love to hear it. May her words live on in the world as she dreamed they would.
