Carol's obituary

On Sunday, September 17, 2023, Carol Curran Sivard passed away at the age of 71 in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Carol was born on October 1, 1951 in Jacksonville, Florida to James Joseph Curran and Toy Edith Ellis Curran. She received her B.S. degree in Physical Education from Barry College (Miami) and later received her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida.

She was survived by her partner, Julie Anne Lumb, daughters, Jessica (James) Lumley, Allison Curran Sivard, and Lindsay (Robert) Tait, grandchildren, Justus Derrick Kvetko, Fiona Elizabeth Lumley and Scarlett Marie Tait, niece, Kristin (Joe) Hyer, grandnephew, Jakob Francis Hyer, and several siblings and friends worldwide.

Carol began her career teaching in Miami and soon started a family. After moving to Tampa in 1978, Carol was a stay-at-home mom caring for a growing family while also pursuing her Master’s degree to continue her career as an educator and media specialist. In Tampa, Carol taught at several schools including Lutz Elementary, Claywell Elementary, Schwarzkopf Elementary, Sulfur Springs Elementary, and Davidsen Middle School before finding a home at Blake High School, where she made many friends and loved working with kids. Carol shared her passion for reading with thousands of children over the years.

Carol was a dedicated mom, always playing an active role in her children’s extracurricular activities throughout their middle and high school years. She enjoyed gardening, volunteering in the community, and traveling, visiting many destinations such as Alaska, Denmark, Belize, Paris, Berlin, and Santorini. Her time was spent enjoying the touristy attractions, but also finding the “off the beaten path” locales and stopping to chat with strangers or indulge in a glass of wine.

In 2019, Carol retired from the Hillsborough County School District, and shortly thereafter in 2022, Carol and Julie sold almost all of their worldly possessions and moved to Portugal to pursue their love for travel and spirit for adventure. There they met and forged many wonderful friendships with fellow expats and locals alike.

Carol was kind, compassionate, and fun. She could always find a way to make you laugh. You could easily spot her in a crowd, almost always wearing her favorite color, purple. Her warmth and kindness will be deeply missed by many. For those who knew her, their hearts will be forever touched.
