Carol's obituary
Carol Serena
Born: October 15, 1967
Died: September 25, 2025
Philadelphia, PA — Carol Serena, whose career spanned some of the nation’s busiest and most celebrated restaurants, has died. She was a central figure in Philadelphia’s hospitality community, known for her uncompromising standards, deep mentorship, and the loyalty she inspired in all who worked with her.
Carol was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Our Lady Help of Christians Elementary School and Bishop Kearney High School before enrolling at the College of New Rochelle, where she studied management. During her college years, she traveled abroad to London, UK. It was there that her love for hospitality began, ultimately propelling her to the top of the field.
Carol’s professional path through the restaurant world was marked by both grit and vision. Early in her career, she worked with China Grill Management, rising through the ranks to become a respected leader. She also held a role with Planet Hollywood before ultimately anchoring her legacy in Philadelphia.
At Parc on Rittenhouse Square, a cornerstone of Starr Restaurants’ portfolio, Carol served as General Manager for many years. Under her leadership, Parc became more than a restaurant — it became a place where staff, guests, and the city’s dining culture intersected. She was famous for walking the dining room hundreds of times daily, scanning every detail, anticipating issues, and setting a tone of excellence. Philadelphia Magazine once described as “the unofficial mayor of Rittenhouse” for her omnipresence and influence.
She was both exacting and generous — demanding of her team, but often the first to offer guidance, counsel, or a listening ear. Many current restaurateurs, servers, and managers trace parts of their professional identity to her mentorship.
Carol’s reputation extended beyond Parc. She was profiled in local media for shaping Philadelphia’s restaurant identity and was active in the hospitality community’s networks and associations. Also known for her devotion to standards, fierce loyalty, kindness, and mentoring spirit. She carried an intensity about her work and warmth for those she supported. She remembered birthdays, congratulated staff on life events, and diligently made time to check in on team members’ health or struggles.
Carol was a lifelong learner and traveler, with a curiosity about people and places that never waned. Outside of work, she enjoyed visiting her family, reading, and she loved her pool at the Wanamaker House where she resided.
Carol is survived by her siblings, Christopher, Barbara and Terry Sautner (Kevin) and was a loving Aunt to Max, Kathleen, Ashe, Danielle, Mary Catherine, Kaitlyn and Jessica.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and John Serena, and brothers John and his wife Joan, David, Eugene and Gerard.
Carol’s passing leaves a substantial void in not only her family and friends lives, but also in Philadelphia’s hospitality world. Her influence lives on in the thousands she mentored, in the standards she set, and in the culture she nurtured. She will be remembered as a leader who demanded excellence, a mentor who shared wisdom, and a force who shaped many careers. She will be deeply missed.
A memorial service for Carol Serena will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in Rittenhouse Square, where a bench will be dedicated in her honor. Following the service, friends, family, and colleagues are invited to a reception at Parc Restaurant at 4:00 p.m. to celebrate Carol’s life and legacy.
