Carol's obituary
Carol was born on January 8, 1945, to Clifford Coe and Doris Coe (Kuykendall), in Portland, Oregon.
At approximately 4 years old Carol suffered from Rheumatic Fever and was bedridden for approximately a year. This illness may have contributed to a lifetime of mental illness (Bipolar schizoid affective disorder).
Growing up she lived by Mt. Tabor in Portland Oregon. She graduated from Franklin High School about 1963 and married Jim Kiersey shortly after at Lakeside Gardens on SE Foster the day JFK was shot.
After 5 years of wedded bliss traveling, four-wheel driving, camping, and adventures, she had her first child and 3 years later her second. Shortly after her second child's birth, they divorced in 1972. During this time her mental illness became apparent and she lost custody of the kids which was unusual for a mother at the time.
She worked for a very brief time for the Oregon Human Services but after a breakdown, she was unable to continue working. She was on disability since. Her ex-husband reunited with her on and off during these times with a sense of obligation and hope she could help with the children. Unfortunately, her mental state did not stabilize and she was in and out of institutions for the next 20 years. During this time she was given dozens of experimental treatments through the years which may have contributed to her declining baseline and dementia in her senior years. It was said she even received shock treatments at Damasche Mental Hospital which was later closed down with many accusations of abuse.
In about 1990 she reunited with Jim and stabilized for a few years at a time. However, when he died of cancer in 1999 she experienced a rapid decline and has been mostly in the care of mental health facilities since then. Her daughter visited her as often as possible and tried to bring fun into her life. She was appointed her legal guardian by the courts and looked after her regarding her health and legal matters. Carol has remained in facilities nonstop since 2007. During these years she had health issues that came and went so it was surprising that Covid 19 Killed her in just 10 days.
Carol always loved clothes, makeup, and art therapy. She was always a happy sweet person, who even in her delusions had a great sense of humor. Every place she has been she brought happiness to the lives of her caregivers.
She is survived by her Brother Richard Coe, son Bryan, daughter Heather and 3 grandchildren, Teal, June, and Jimi.
