Carmelita's obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Carmelita Amorin Singson on January 10, 2024, born to this world on January 8, 1944. Carmelita embraced life with an indomitable spirit and a sense of adventure. Her legacy of love, strength, and generosity has left an indelible mark on those who knew her.

Honoring her humble beginnings in Paoa, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, Carmelita carried the values she learned there throughout her lifetime – to study hard, do good to others, be thrifty, and care for your family, friends and community. Carmelita met the love of her life, Alonzo Reyes Singson, in 1963 when she was a student nurse tending to his aunt in the hospital. In 1964, Carmelita began a new chapter when she moved to Philadelphia, PA to attend a nursing exchange program with the University of Pennsylvania; later she moved to Evanston, IL to attend another nursing program. In November of 1964, Alonzo followed his sweetheart to the United States. They were married in 1965 and built a beautiful life together in Southern California. Carmelita continued her career as a nurse with Cedars Sinai and then as a nurse leader with Kaiser Permanente, where she retired from in 1994 after almost 30 successful years.

Carmelita is survived by her devoted husband Alonzo, her loving daughters Julie Ethington and Maria Singson, and her son-in-law, Todd Ethington. Her legacy extends to her cherished grandchildren: Beckie and Steven Ethington, who were her sources of pride and joy.  She is survived by her sister, Luz Amorin Andam and her brother, Edgar Amorin.

Blue like the sky and the ocean, Carmelita's favorite color was a reflection of her luminous personality and her love for traveling. Cruising the world was her favorite way to exercise and she got in plenty of steps touring and weight lifting her luggage. Carmelita also enjoyed spending time in her garden tending to her orchids, succulents and vegetables.  She also always made sure to leave a little snack for her squirrel friends. Above all, Carmelita valued her family more than anything else.

A viewing will be held on January 24, 2024, from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at Forest Lawn Hollywood. Her life will be celebrated on January 25, 2024, at 9:00 AM at the Old North Church at Forest Lawn Hollywood, and will be followed by a reception in the Glendale area.

As we bid her farewell, we remember Carmelita not just as a beloved family member and friend, but as a woman whose generosity helped many others achieve their personal goals. We celebrate her life, her values, and the love she imparted to everyone she met. May her soul rest in peace, and her legacy continue to inspire all of us.
