Carlos's obituary

Sergeant First Class Carlos Ernesto Chalacan was born on October 25, 1981, in Quito, Ecuador. During his mid teenage years, he moved to Pompano Beach, FL.

He loved life and was always seeking new adventures with his wife, Linda. He passed away unexpectedly on June 16, 2023, during, what would become, their last adventure together while they were river tubing on the Arkansas River in Buena Vista, CO.

Carlos served proudly and with honor in the United States Army from July 8, 1999 – July 7, 2002, at Fort Carson, CO. He then immediately enlisted in the Colorado Army National Guard as Unit Member from July 8, 2002 – February 3, 2003, and was currently serving in the Colorado Army National Guard as Active Guard Reserve from February 4, 2003 - Present as the Senior Human Resources NCO for 117th Space Support Battalion.  His first Military Occupational Skill was 13B, Cannon Crewmember. He then reclassified to 91B, Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, and 42A, Human Resources Sergeant.

He served overseas in Kuwait and Afghanistan from 2001 – 2002. Then in 2010, he was sent overseas for a combat tour in Afghanistan with the 193rd Military Police Battalion where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

His other federal achievement and service awards include the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal with 1 Silver Loop, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.

His badges include the Air Assault Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-W, Driver-T, Mechanic Bars, and the Expert Marksmanship Badge.

Carlos was a man of many passions and he put his heart and soul into everything that he did. One of his passions was education which extended into obtaining a Bachelor of Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in 2004 and a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering – With Structure and Design Concentration, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in 2006. He was currently pursuing a Bachelor of Innovation in Business, Pikes Peak Community College.

His wealth of knowledge made him such a valuable teacher and mentor, not only to hundreds of Soldiers that he served with, but also within his family, friends, and community.

The love he had for motorcycles granted him the opportunity to help the Veteran community. He affiliated himself with the Steel Soldiers Motorcycle Group and Brotherhood of Veterans Motorcycle Association where he raised thousands of dollars for Veterans in need. He was currently a probationary for the Gringo’s Motorcycle Club where he was going to carry on his selfless service. His MC brothers knew him by his alias Lobo.

The many meaningful friends he made outside of the military was when he joined several soccer leagues throughout the years. Soccer was embedded in his blood ever since he was a young boy, and he was great at it.

Above all, his main priority was to be the best father to his beautiful, intelligent children, Kristen and Tyler. He shared his love for classic cars with Kristen and his love for action movies with Tyler. He traveled the world with them and built amazing memories. He loved them dearly.

Carlos was undoubtably a force of life that will always remain with us. He will always be remembered as a loving father, endearing husband, caring son, loyal friend, compassionate brother, and one of the most knowledgeable and respected Non Commissioned Officers.

Carlos is survived by his wife, Linda Miranda; his mother, Marcia Rendon; his children, Kristen Chalacan and Tyler Chalacan; his half sisters, Gemita Chalacan and Andrea Chalacan; and his niece, Camila.
