Sonny's obituary
Carl “Sonny” Zigler, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at his home in Finksburg, Maryland. He was 79 years old.
Sonny was born in Grottoes, Virginia in 1942 to parents Albert Zigler and Sybile Loucks. He left home at a very early age and had more experiences in his teen years than many have in a lifetime. He ultimately ended up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he met his first wife, Joan Hecht Zigler. He was left a widow in 2004 and remarried in 2020. Sonny is survived by his current wife Pamela Franey Zigler, his children Steven Zigler and Laurie Hartman, step sons James and Jason Zuelch, adopted son Joseph Caplan and eight grandchildren.
Sonny was an Army veteran. He graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne Course at Ft. Benning, Georgia in 1965 and went on to serve in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and the Army Sharpshooter Marksman Badge M-14. He ended his career at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC in 1970. He later became an active member of the community and a lifetime member of The American Legion and the VFW.
Sonny was always surrounded by friends. He will be remembered for his love of crabbing, fishing, boating, hunting, billiards, and horse racing.
We will greatly miss the pincher of cheeks, the provider of crabs, and the consistent readiness to share a beer or an opinion. Sonny was a kind and loving man, husband, dad, grandfather, father-in-law, and friend to many. We will miss his positive presence in our lives but he will always be in our hearts. Pouring out a little Bud as we raise one more beer in his honor.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined to celebrate Sonny’s life.
