Caren's obituary

Former Maryland resident Caren Susan Whitcher lost her courageous battle with cancer on June 22, 2019. Caren was a beloved mother, wife, sister, and friend. After being diagnosed in November of 2017, Caren became a medical anomaly to her doctors- having beaten the odds many times over throughout her fight, before finally succumbing to the disease.

Caren’s smile was contagious, and her laugh infectious. She had that unique ability to light up every room as she entered. Her heart was genuine and she was always the first to lend her support to a friend, or a family member in need. Her house was always the focal point for family events, as she was the most gracious entertainer and hostess.

Caren was born on April 15, 1958, in Springfield, Ohio to Stanley and Elaine Sanders. She grew up in Edgewater Maryland, before relocating to New Orleans, Louisiana with her first husband, Harry Tonges. She lived in West Virginia, Indiana, and Arizona before returning and settling in Mayo, Maryland with the love of her life, David Whitcher. Caren spent many years working in the mortgage loan industry. She loved spending time with her family, especially her children and her many nieces and nephews.

Caren is preceded in death by her parents, Elaine Delores Golden and Everette Stanley Sanders.

Caren is survived by her husband, David Whitcher of Port Charlotte, Florida, her daughter, Laura Tonges of Phoenix, Arizona and her son Andrew Tonges (Jen) of Phoenix, Arizona. She is also survived by her sisters, Catherine Sanders, Pamela Imes, and her brother Stanley (Skip) Sanders, along with many loving nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 515 Loch Haven Rd., Edgewater, MD, Maryland on July 12th at 1 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held following the service at the Elks Lodge, 2 Pythian Dr., Edgewater, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Alexander Glick and his staff for their tireless efforts in battling alongside Caren.
