I first met Candi at a LeadingAge conference. A friend of mine talked me into attending a HUD session. I walked in the room and looked to the front and the speakers had cat ears and whiskers. I wondered what I had walked into. Apparently, this was a norm for Candi. I don’t think I ever laughed and enjoyed a session as much as that first encounter with Candi.

Well I had the privilege of meeting this wonderful person at an AAHSA gathering now (Leading. Age) back in the 80’s. We were all mesmerized by her ability to take over a room and literally captivate us with something as mundane as HUD regulations. There wasn’t a thing you could throw at her that she couldn’t answer. She knew every HUD and federal regulation published. She had a special way of getting the point across when she was challenged with “Well that rule is stupid and we aren’t going to do that”. OMG let the festivities begin. She could put you in your place so quickly and let you know WHY you BETTER follow those regs. And even after getting her point across as only Candi could do you still wanted to hug her neck. After our first workshop with Candi we were addicted. We know she was the “GO TO” for all our HUD training. I had an ongoing relationship with Candi as I was very involved and held many offices in AAHSA. I traveled to the AAHSA conferences and immediately we connected. Her Karen Contrenchis and I spent many many wonderful times together. I had Candi on speed dial and she always always made time for me. Our relationship continued over the years she was very involved in Christoper Homes in Louisiana and I was with the Catholic Diocese in Biloxi.. We saw each other at least 3 times a year and depending on what was coming down the pike maybe more. ... We dined with some very influential, powerful, people. No on intimidated Candi... she always was the life of the party she always had us in stitches. To say she was loved and respected is an understatement. She had more knowledge in her little finger than most HUD employees. She could dissect HUD regulations and knew the federal register like the back of her hand. And when she felt she needed to challenge someone including HUD, because they were giving out the wrong information she did. If Candi didn’t know the answer there wasn’t one. But what we all loved about Candi was her beautiful spirit. She was loving and kind, knowledgeable, funny, passionate, devoted.. She loved her children loved life and was devoted to her cause. Candi was a friend to so many. I could tell story after story but one of the funniest ones was she showed up at a conference with these shoes that had springs on them. Well let me tell you did we have a ball with them. A bunch of us tried them on and laughed til we cried as some of these women tried to walk in them. God love her she was always looking for comfort. She worked hard and played hard. Candi will always be a part of my memories. I was in HUD housing for 43 years. I learned 99% of my HUD knowledge from that amazing lady. I never failed a HUD or REAC inspection and I owe that to her. Amanda, Jimmy my heart aches for y’all as you are gonna have to figure out how to do life without that amazing person. Just know how much she loved y’all. There wasn’t a meeting or training that she didn’t mention and talk about her children. Candi was a character full of life...she will be missed but never forgotten. I am a better person and was a better employee because of her. I will always be grateful!! God bless and I know she is cutting up in Heaven with no more pain...

Many thanks to Candi for bringing Amanda into this world. Candi’s influence was very apparent, and i will miss her smart and fun presence. To all her friends and family, please accept my wife and my sincere condolences.
