I met Calvin in my first semester at KU--"World Civilization".  Got to know him better as he and John were in a group of smart, semi-nerdy (but socially adept!) guys.  One thing that put him in my category of "close friend" was his help when my brother Bob got seriously ill in Dallas and developed periodic seizures as a result of a head injury. One night I was on the phone with Bob and he had a seizure--I was living in Pennsylvania and all I could think of was to call Cal, tell him what was happening, and ask him to call an ambulance to take my brother to the hospital.  He did, and called me back to tell me Bob was OK. 

My sympathy is with you.  Calvin was a favorite friend from K. U. days.  His serious side was impressive, always expressed with good humor.
