Chef Caleb and his adorable sou chef, Stephanie - December 2010
Stephanie & Caleb made my…
Stephanie & Caleb made my birthday in 2010 extra special by preparing a special meal just for me and my family! Thank you!!
My husband, Allen, and I met CALEB and Stephanie in December 2010, just a few days before my birthday. When Allen learned that Caleb was a professionally trained chef, he asked if he would mind coming to our house and preparing a special dinner for our family. Caleb quickly agreed and he and Stephanie showed up in their white coats along with Caleb’s special chef knives. We were fascinated as we watched him at work and asked a million questions. He didn’t seem to mind and would smile as he answered as he continued to prepare dinner. We learned so much and I felt so honored! I mean...how often does one get to observe a Chef and have their undivided attention! Stephanie was adorable as she stood by his side with her sweet smile and worked as his sou chef.

The meal was fabulous and better than any restaurant. I can still remember the soft homemade bread loaf, the tender, mouth-watering steak, the delicious asparagus and my first try of Tarragon sweet potatoes. And to top it off, it was the first time in 51 years that I had ever had a beautiful flower on my plate served alongside food! It truly was art and so so delicious! Then came dessert...I actually giggled when I took the first bite of some sort of chocolate dessert. (I can’t remember now but he must have gotten word that chocolate anything was my favorite.) My kids looked at me and asked why I was giggling. I said, “just wait until you taste this!” That night was so wonderful and left me smiling for days. I’m glad I took a few pictures that night so I can always remember. I have posted them here as well.

I can only remember a handful of birthday celebrations of what I actually did to celebrate, but this one always stands out and is my favorite! I think back on that birthday dinner almost every year. Caleb was such an inspiration that 4-5 years later, I gave Allen “The Art of French Cooking” by Julia Child, after watching one of our favorite movies Julie and Julia. My husband started prepping delicious meals and became my personal little chef when he retired, saying that I had cooked all those years so now he would take his turn. We later hosted two couples and Allen prepared a French dinner using some of the things he learned from Caleb. Caleb was our inspiration many times and we thought of him and Stephanie a lot and enjoyed their company on a few other occasions. My husband has recently resumed a love for wood working and has made several cutting boards. Oh how we would love to show Caleb and talk about food and recipes and life.

Caleb was a kind and thoughtful person and we are so thankful we had that chance meeting years ago along with sweet Stephanie. He was loved and will always be remembered! Our heartfelt prayers and love will continue for Stephanie and all of their family.

One thing that stuck with me about Caleb was how good he was with my kids. Whenever he and Stephanie would visit, he found a way to include them. They gravitated towards him as well, likely because of his humor. I noticed that he just had a caring aura about him, and I’m sure the kids felt that too. He and Stephanie were meant for each other; I’m just sad that he’s no longer physically with us. His memory lives on thanks to family and friends, though.

We shared so many laughs it’s hard to narrow down to just one. I will never forget him always putting safety pins through his ear piercing holes and tongue holes for shock value. We have the same sense of humor and we always seemed to laugh at the most unfortunate times. He was always willing to cook and hang out. He will be deeply missed!!! Until we meet again! Love y’all.

Rachel,
We send our sincerest condolences to you and your family during this time.
Love Always,
The Davis Family
Our hearts were broken when we heard of our friend passing. It seems odd to live in a world where our paths will no longer cross. As a believer, Caleb has the great joy of being present with his Creator. We will meet again one day. Caleb just went ahead early to help prepare the feast. Much love and sympathy to Stephanie.
I think one of the first times I met Caleb, we got together for lunch somewhere in Fort Worth. He sat there looking amused while the two of us (Stephanie and I) kept putting our hands in each other’s food, saying “Is that any good?” Before we all parted ways, he told me “Primus Sucks” (one way that Primus fans recognize each other). Good times. He made a good first impression. I’m glad we didn’t scare him off.
It’s so incredibly hard to believe this. Our prayers, thoughts, and support go out to Stephanie and our family. The last time I saw Caleb he brought me one of my most cherished gifts. It was a fly fishing rod that was my grandfather/his dad’s. He told me that he thought I would appreciate it for it being my grandpa’s. Little did I know I will cherish it even more now. We are all going to miss you! I will never forget the many shenanigans that we got into as kids and the time I got to spend time with you in Battle Creek. I feel like I could write a novel just so I don’t have to stop and say it’s done. You were one of a kind and I know you are reunited with grandpa and all is good but you definitely left a hole in a lot of people here. For reasons we will not know you were taken early and all we can do is be thankful for the time we had and will have in eternity. So much love for you Uncle 🙏
Caleb was an amazing friend. I got to know him through work. He had a bunch of random knowledge that would come out of nowhere. We made a lot of memories as friends from making homemade bacon to breakfast get togethers.
He will be missed
I am so very grateful to God for the gift of Caleb. Very few people in life love as fiercely and employ such loyalty in friendship. My mind plays back the many conversations, some funny and superficial, some scientific and questioning, and others serious and of the heart. I was happy for him when he moved to Texas because I knew it would be good for him. I was overjoyed when he found the love of his life, and it was a pleasure to see your adventures together. Thank you, Stephanie for being a wonderful partner. I don't know you, but I can imagine how wonderful you are. I lift you in prayer and I hope that your heart finds peace and comfort. Personally, I'm struggling not to feel the loss of Caleb. I'm choosing instead to fill that void with all of the love I have for him. He has always been one of the best people I know. Perhaps a favorite among my favorite of friends. No matter the time or distance, we could always find common ground. Caleb was one of two people that lead me to my relationship with God. That was no small feat and I will be forever in his debt for that. I imagine that Heaven is celebrating his arrival. I will remember Caleb forever, and I will work to honor him any chance I get.
You were a good man and always humbled. This is very shocking news. You just posted on my Facebook last week. RIP and pray for your family.
So very saddened at Caleb’s passing. Stephanie keeping you in my prayers, my heart and thoughts. Jonna Garner
