Caleb's obituary

Caleb Alexander Smith of Augusta, Maine lost his life on the evening of Wednesday, November 19th, 2025 at Maine Medical Center. Caleb was only 59 years old. Caleb fought valiantly the last month of his life battling an acute on chronic illness that ultimately took him from us.

Caleb was born in Brunswick, Maine, August 13, 1966. Caleb was the proud 4th child of his loving parents Edward Smith and Marion (Piper) Smith. Caleb grew up in a home his family built in the woods of Mount Vernon, Maine. His foundation was formed here where his parents instilled in Caleb the values, morales and integrity that created the amazing man he became. He was always a person you could count on and he didn't hesitate to help anyone in need.

Caleb was proud to have attended Maranacook High School in Readfield, Maine, graduating in the class of 1984. He loved the teachers he learned from and the bonds of friendship that were created there. Here he made true lifelong friends. These were some of the best years of Calebs’ life. The antics he and his friends were involved in were joyfully told in stories by Caleb for years. Whether it be falling off Mt Kineo, or his bike trip where he formed an aversion to banana chips. Caleb beamed when he spoke of these times and the people who meant so much to him.

Caleb was hard-working and dedicated. He spent 35+ years working in the automotive industry in various roles, mostly for Oconner GMC in Augusta, Maine. Caleb was a consummate professional and was known for his honesty, integrity and kindness. He was incredibly smart, and respectful to those he served. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for his family and his passions.

Caleb married Lisa (Fongemie) Smith in 1993, and built a home and a family in Augusta, Maine. Caleb and Lisa were married for 23 years and remained friends after their marriage ended, celebrating holidays and going on vacations together with their children and grandchildren.

Caleb and Lisa had two daughters, Ashlee Smith and Haley Smith. Caleb was a generous, patient and supportive Dad and would always show up when they needed help with anything in life, whether something big like moving or illness, or little things like taking care of a scary spider in their home. He was proud of his daughters and his phone was full of pictures of Haley’s pets and Ashlee’s children and house projects, all of which he proudly showed off to friends and coworkers.

Caleb had 2 granddaughters who brought tremendous joy to his life. Ava Cahill and Kamdyn Cahill loved their Gampy. He was supportive and always made time for their concerts, birthday parties, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Their artwork adorns his fridge.

Caleb spent every birthday celebrating with his daughters and granddaughters. They would go to Reid State Park and then to Five islands for a lobster meal. He loved this tradition which was a combination of things he held dear: his family, the ocean and great food.

Caleb loved to travel, particularly to far off exotic places and he was fortunate to do so often later in his life, Thailand being amongst his favorites. He enjoyed sharing stories of places he has seen and things he has done on his travels. He very generously brought his children and grandchildren on a vacation to Disney World recently, which is something he was so proud to have been able to give to his family.

Caleb also loved to fly fish. Caleb had a tradition of going to Grand Lake stream every Memorial Day with close friends and family. It was the highlight of his year every year. He thrived on the comradery and boasted for months about the amazing food.

Caleb is predeceased by his father Edward “Ted” Smith, his mother Marion (Piper) Smith, and his brother Daniel Smith.

Caleb is survived by his daughters Ashlee Smith and Haley Smith, granddaughters Ava Cahill and Kamdyn Cahill, his oldest brother Robin Smith and his sister in law Anne Smith, his sister Elizabeth Smith, and sister in law Cynthia Smith. Caleb has a large family, many aunts, uncles and cousins as well as nieces and a nephew that he always held in high regard. He was an amazing father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, colleague and friend. Caleb touched the lives of so many people, and everyone who knew him was better because of it.

The family would like to thank the exceptional nurses and doctors of Maine Medical Center who provided such thorough, attentive care to Caleb. A celebration of life service is being planned for spring of 2026, details to come. In lieu of flowers or donations, please plant a tree in Caleb’s honor. Over the years, Caleb’s daughters have gifted him a variety of trees that he enjoyed planting around his home and updating his children on how the trees were faring.
