Byron was horsing around one day in the office, and I found him hiding behind a door. I pinned him in there and we found a giant candy cane decoration and started poking him with it. He was laughing so hard he couldn't defend himself. The man knew how to laugh, I can still hear his laugh in the office.

Any time playing golf with Byron was fun. One time he hit roof of a house under construction. There was a guy working on the and we thought he was going fall off when the ball almost hit him. I was getting ready to hit and he told me to get in the cart. We drove along the fairway on the opposite side and miraculously found two balls. The guy on the roof is probably still trying to figure out where the ball came from.

I first met Byron in June 1979 when I arrived as a journeyman forecaster to fill a vacant position on the National Weather Service staff. Jim Wiesmueller arrived on the same day from Fairbanks, Alaska to fill a different forecaster position.

Byron had arrived in the Denver office in April 1979 as a meterological technician. His job was to take observations, answer phones, and do some other tasks around the office to keep data and records in order.

When I met Byron, found him to be a very open and friendly person, and one that became a life long friend from then on. While I did not play golf or bowl, we did play volleyball together with staff from our office and the FAA office nearby about once a week in the summer after the day shift was done. The FAA eventually sent many of those jobs elsewhere, so that ended the volleyball games as there were not enough people left to field two teams.

Byron and I stayed in contact after I retired in May 2001. He could not come to our retiree meetings after he retired, because they were held at the same time as his bowling league played. When the bowling league was out of season, he managed to come with me to 3 or 4 retiree luncheons.

Byron was well qualified to become the DAPM (Data Acquisition
Program Manager) after his boss, Chuck McCain retired. In the 22 years Byron and I worked together, I never heard anyone say anything negative about Byron. He was well-liked and respected by all. He reminded me of the humorist Will Rogers saying. "I never met a man, I didn't like". Byron was the same way. I never heard him say anything bad about anyone.

After our office relocated to the David Skaggs Building in Boulder, I was surprised at how many people in that building knew Byron. He made his way around that building and knew many more people than I did even though I had worked at times with some of the PROFS people who were working on programs and upgrades to the computer systems we used in the Forecast Office. That shows how easy it was to meet and make friends with him.

It is too bad, there are not more people like Byron. If there were, perhaps there would not be all the discontent, hate, and racism that exists in America. It is really sad to lose someone like him so early since he is 12 years younger than me, and had so much energy to give to other people and causes he supported.

I met Byron when I was a work-study student at the Denver NWS at Stapleton. Once I moved on to a research position at NOAA in Boulder, and the NWS moved their office to the NOAA building on Broadway, I loved running into Byron at work. He always brought a smile to my face that lasted longer than our encounter! To Byron’s family – I am so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine the gaping hole you must feel in your lives without him here on earth.
Just saw the notice in the NIST Weekly Bulletin and I'm shocked and saddened by this loss. Byron was truly a man we should all aspire to be. When you hear a story about someone who could light up a room, you immediately thought of Byron. I didn't know him closely...but everyone in the building knew him...he never met a stranger. So friendly and always had a smile. Prayers for his family.
Byron was the only man I knew who could walk into a conference wearing a lime green suit and look absolutely dashing! You are the man my dear friend. My son, Jeremy, still remembers you telling him to "always pass attention, no matter where you are or what you are doing". Thank you for having pizza with my granddaughter Brooklynn and me when we last passed through Denver. Your smile and kindness will be missed. Maddog
Sooo many memories. Ever since I was a little girl, you’ve always told me how pretty you thought I was. The last time I visited you in Colorado, you said “I’ve always thought you were pretty”. We had a long talk during that visit. You said a lot of things that inspired and encouraged me that day. It meant a lot to me, and I’ll cherish that forever. Earlier this year, I told my husband “The next time we visit uncle B, I’m gonna have some pretty cool stuff to share with him”. The last time we spoke, June 30th. I didn’t want to share with you over the phone, I wanted to share with you when I saw you next. Though I didn’t get to see you after our last conversation, I’m grateful for the time God allowed us to have you in our lives. There could never be another Uncle B. Love you!
Thank you so much for inviting me into your home. I couldn't tell you how much I appreciated it at the time. I just needed to get away and you took me in with open arms. It meant the world to me. You even have me one of your suits. It's still hanging up in my closet. It means the world to me. I even still have the hat you gave me. It's in a special place just like I know you are. I will miss you so much. Rest easy, dude.
I’m going to miss you Uncle B!! I named my youngest boy Tyrese Bernard after you because you mean the world to me. I love you and my cousins. Hugs and kisses
Sending condolences to my family in Colorado from your family in Oklahoma. I did not know Bernard until 1983. I had gone to K.C. Mo. in July 1983 for my mom's funeral . After the services I was talking to Bernard's aunt Velma and she said your cousin Bernard lives in Colorado and he said he has no family up there. I said what is his phone number because he has family up there. I called him when I got back and introduced him to the rest of his family in Colorado and the rest is history. We will miss you cousin and our card games ,dominoes games and golfing RIP.
Uncle B -
Though out my entire life you've extended advice with my dad about life experiences and I will cherish ever moment we've had. From wrestling when you walked in the door to comparing how "tall" I was getting (I will never forget the time I was FINALLY taller than you). I will never forget your laugh.

Love you always.
You are gone from our sight, but never from our heart. You and I had some great times together that I will never forget. Our trip to visit Cliff is on my top ten list of wonderful life experiences. So glad to have been apart of your life. Keeping the family in my prayers. Love you guys.
Byron is deeply missed by all…

Byron is deeply missed by all in our cul-de-sac. A wonderful neighbor and friend for many years - always willing to lend a helping hand or just make you smile. You might be in a rush leaving the cul-de-sac but he would flag you down to regale you with a funny yarn...and the rush to go somewhere became unimportant. He was a loveable rogue and a larger than life character at our annual parties. Of course he often arrived late because those ribs had to be cooked just right! A passionate Chiefs fan in Broncos country but more than held his own even when the Chiefs weren't doing good!! Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis - may his faithful soul rest at the right hand of God.
To your family from my family within a family. Words cannot express how deeply we are sorry for this loss. Bernard you are going to be truly missed by your family and friends. I looked up to you as many of us did, you are a great father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. You Was sooo smart and extremely thoughtful and helpful to people. You Loved deep and hard your heart is compassionate towards people, and protective. You will truly be missed but not forgotten, love you, your little sister wanda
