Bud's obituary

Bud Harry Gerald Newman III – a devout follower of Christ, Biblical scholar, talented artist, skilled boxer, beloved son and brother, cherished uncle and dear friend to so many, entered eternal life on February 28, 2025.

Bud spoke softly and carried a big stick in life. He brought kindness, comfort and protection to friends, family, strangers, and animals alike. His soul was a beautiful painting, full of wild colors and deep emotions. Bud loved a cup of coffee, a pen and paper, his guitar, and time spent in the Word. Bud ministered to those in need and served others with a Christ-like heart even in his final days.

As a young child, Bud painted a picture of a tiger on the wall of the family living room. From then on, art was a constant in his life. Bud was trained as an illustrator and graphic designer. He created numerous cartoon series, including "Revelation = Revolution" and "Bum Rap Jungle Cat". Bud authored and self-published “Why the Lion is King” in 1991, and while working at Rubicon Children’s Center, he used his masterpiece to teach children how to read.

Bud also used his artistic talents as a technical illustrator at Lawrence Livermore Labs. In the last two decades of his life, Bud became a steward of the land, furthering his ministry by tending to many properties throughout San Luis Obispo County including that of his dear friend, Barry.

Bud loved and cared deeply for his mother, Sesame Smith, and father, Harry Gerald Newman, and made his parents immensely proud. Bud is survived by his brothers, William Moore and Matthew Newman, and his sisters, Mary Newman and Kelly Newman. He is predeceased by his precious brother in flesh and in faith, John Henry Newman, and sister, Marilyn Newman. Although Bud never married, he was an important parental figure to his nieces and nephews: Lisa Williams, Jade Puschautz, Heather Hamilton, Alexander Newman (Godson), and Irene Allman.

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:17-18.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at Cayucos Cemetery. Additional details about the Service will be provided in the days ahead.
