Bryan's obituary

Dr. Bryan Barber, known to friends and family as “Doc”, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He passed away surrounded by family and loved ones in his home on June 22nd, 2021. Bryan was a charismatic and engaging soul who sought endlessly to enrich the lives of those around him. After graduating from Chagrin Falls High School, Doc applied to one university, Harvard, where he went on to get his undergraduate degree. He was less than transparent to admissions as to whether he could afford tuition and drove a taxi to pay his way. Doc then went on to graduate from Boston University with his medical degree. The gravity with which Doc approached being a Physician and Orthopedic Surgeon cannot be overstated. He was never one to balk at a problem other doctors could not or would not face. His understanding of the human body and his ability to see the best course of action and act quickly and precisely truly changed the lives of countless people.
Doc had a generous and adventurous spirit and he was never tame. In his youth, Bryan played basketball and wrestled and as an adult, he sailed, skied, snow-mobiled and skydived. He lent his skill as Team Physician for the legendary hockey team the New England Whalers for several seasons including their Championship season of 1972-73. He had his pilot’s license and owned a small plane which he used for work and pleasure. Doc once even survived a crash landing with his wheels up. The cause of the crash was proven to not be his fault by the FAA but flying in instrument weather with an expired pilot’s instrument rating certainly was. He bent rules regularly and was always one to do things his way. He loved throwing parties and would often drag his kids and family on adventures that hindsight suggests were not always 100% appropriate. His exploits were legendary. He was never afraid to tell you what he thought, oftentimes argumentatively, but his sense of humor and charm placed him in the hearts of many.
Bryan was proud of his children and took great pleasure in investing himself fully in their hobbies. He drove Graham around the country on the motocross circuit (including one time around the race track itself with his van and trailer), supported Tim in his car racing and Kristin and Jesse’s love of horses with every fiber of his being. He is survived by his four children, Graham Barber, Kristin Lyons, Jesse Barber and Tim Barber, seven grandchildren – Baylee and Madison Barber, Schuyler and Grayson Lyons, Annica and Caden Willard, and Sterling Barber– one great-granddaughter, Josephine Barber-Twitchell, and his goddaughter Georgina Oram.
A celebration of Doc’s life will be held at the Vallejo Yacht Club, 485 Mare Island Way, Vallejo, CA on Saturday, August 7th, 2021 from 5-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please send any memories or stories of Doc to madison.barber.04@gmail.com, and perform a random act of generosity and kindness. Doc was constantly showering those around him with whatever he had to give and this is the best way to continue his legacy.
