Background

Bruce was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological disorder the spring of 2016, after undergoing more than six months treatment for a closed head concussion he sustained in a fall. After numerous trips to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL he was finally told in September 2018 the doctor believed he had Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). LBD is a progressive brain disorder in which Lewy bodies (abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein) build up in areas of the brain that regulate behavior, cognition, and movement. A complex disease, LBD can present with a range of symptoms including problems with thinking, memory, moving, sleep and/or changes in behavior, to name a few of the physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. LBD also affects autonomic body functions, such as blood pressure control, temperature regulation, and bladder and bowel function. Progressively debilitating, LBD can also cause people to experience visual hallucinations or act out their dreams.

Lewy Body Dementia has no known cause or cure. LBD can be a difficult disease to diagnose because it can look like Parkinson’s, stroke, or many rare disorders. Indeed, doctors initially suggested Bruce’s had multiple system atrophy. The only way to obtain a confirmed diagnosis is through brain donation. Researchers need donated brain tissue of those who died with confirmed LBD if treatments, causes, and a cure are to be discovered. Bruce’s family planned well in advance to donate his brain to further this research and, with Brain Support Network’s help, was able to accomplish this. Bruce also generously donated his body to further medical research and to help train medical specialists, which benefits us all.

Brain Support Network helped over 700 families donate a loved one’s brain by assisting in the complex arrangements. Your generous contributions in Bruce’s memory allow us to continue to support vital medical research into LBD and its many look‐alike conditions. Contributions can be made by check sent to Brain Support Network, PO Box 7264, Menlo Park, CA 94026, or online by credit card at brainsupportnetwork.org. Thank you for your support!
