Brian Patrick McCarthy

Brian died recently from complications of quadriplegia caused by a tragic bicycle accident over a year ago. He was 66.

Brian was pre-deceased by his parents, Thomas and Anastasia, and his brother Christopher. He is survived by his brother Thomas, sister Constance, sister-in-law Colleen, nephew and niece Nicholas and Danielle — all McCarthys, and by his uncle and aunt, Jim and Ruth Gravanis.

Brian is a San Francisco native who grew up in the Sunset and attended Abraham Lincoln High. He graduated from San Francisco State University Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Communication Studies.

As a volunteer he worked on a number of election campaigns and also provided constituent services in the office of then-Supervisor Bevan Dufty.

Brian worked in the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services as a Special Assistant to Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. before becoming a Management Assistant in the Department of Community and Public Relations at Muni. In November 2003 he received a special recognition award from the Municipal Transportation Agency. He also worked for Bill Graham Presents at the Fillmore and considered Bill to be a mentor.

Brian was very much into yoga, bike riding and photography, and was a long-time member of MOMA. A serious music lover, he had a special appreciation for classical, jazz, blues and rock, and he was a regular at the SF Symphony.

His cheerful smile will be remembered by many.

Brian asked that any memorial donations to go to Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.
