Brian's obituary

Brian L. Glennie, 76, of Hastings, Mn

A memorial service for Brian L. Glennie, 76, of Hastings, formerly of International Falls, will be held at the Green-Larsen Funeral Home in International Falls. His ashes will be buried in the family plot next to his parents in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Brian died on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023. He had a long battle with dementia, but succumbed to acute leukemia at Brookdale Alzheimers & Dementia Care in Eagan, where he had been a resident for over two years.

Born on Jan. 19, 1947 at Littlefork, Brian was the second of three sons of Peter M. and Helen (Hietala) Glennie. He grew up in International Falls and graduated from Falls High School in 1965.

In his youth, he was an avid outdoorsman and golfer. He also earned his pilot license when he was younger.

While in high school, Brian was a three-sport athlete. He played football and was on the Broncos track and field team, but he excelled in ice hockey.

As a Falls Bronco hockey player, Brian was a defensemen on the 1963, 1964 and 1965 state tournament teams, where the Broncos won the one-class state title in 1964 and 1965. The 1963 team was runner-up in the state finals.

His hockey playing talents earned him a scholarship at Michigan State University at East Lansing, Mich. He played for the MSU Spartans and earned a degree in packaging engineering. He later earned a second degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

After college, Brian worked in the Bloomington, Ill., area where he met and married Leslie Shifflet of Waynesville, Ill. They later moved to the Twin Cities area where Brian worked many years for 3M in St. Paul.

He later started his own sauna business by designing and building Finnish saunas from scratch. He was proud of his Finnish heritage and handyman skills.

Brian also worked for a variety of other manufacturers in the Twin Cities area before his retirement from the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant near Red Wing.

The Glennies have two children, Annie of Hastings and Levi of St. Paul. Besides his two children, survivors include his former wife, Leslie of Waynesville, Ill.; two grandchildren, Lief and Brianna Johnson of Hastings; two brothers, Dr. Peter (Nita) Glennie of Tucson, Ariz, and Richard (Karen) Glennie of Glencoe, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins as well as many friends from his days in International Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
