Brian's obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Brian Gregory Bensko, 66, of Norwich, Connecticut, announces his peaceful passing on February 22, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Brian was born on August 28, 1959, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Arthur Bensko and Marcella (Davis) Bensko. The family later relocated to Gales Ferry, Connecticut, where Brian grew up and would eventually raise his own family. After graduating from Ledyard High School in 1977, Brian joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a Sergeant in the Air Traffic Control and Communications Repair Division from 1977 to 1982. Following his service, he began his career at NCR and later worked as a dental technician at Patterson Dental before retiring.
Brian was known for his salt-of-the-earth, honest nature, his steady disposition, and straightforward approach to life. Quiet and uncomplaining, he was a natural tinkerer who could fix almost anything- from cars to household projects- and was always quick to help his children navigate a used car purchase with the benefit of his expertise.
To know Brian was to know love and devotion. His kids never tired of hearing the words “I love you and I’m so proud of you” and he never tired of telling them. Beyond his words, he showed his love through his craft – making and fixing. Whether it was elaborate science fair projects, repairing broken-down cars, painting the girls’ bedroom, fixing a broken chicken coop, hand-crafting a wooden rocking horse, building wedding decorations, or recording video footage for his eldest daughter’s wedding day, Brian poured his care and attention into everything he did. As his youngest daughter once described in grade school, his job was simply that “he fixes everything.” One of Brian’s greatest joys was being a father to his four children and supporting their educational, artistic, and athletic pursuits. His values of curiosity, perseverance, and compassion live on in each of them, expressed in their own unique way.
Brian is survived by his four children: Bradley Bensko of Mystic, CT; Jillian Bensko and Colin Fields of Boston, MA; Tyler and Emily Bensko of Ledyard, CT; and Jenna Bensko of Boulder, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Andersen. He is also survived by his former wife and continued friend, Debra Bensko of Groton, CT.
In lieu of flowers, Brian requested that donations be made to the ECHO (Eastern Connecticut Hematology & Oncology) Cancer Foundation, in recognition of the team at ECHO who were instrumental in his care and who always treated him with unwavering kindness and compassion. Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of life, which will be held at Connecticut College March 21st, 2026 at 2:00pm.
