Brenner's obituary

Brenner

11.26.13-10.29.23

Brenner was born in Columbia, MO, as far as we know, and discovered in a barn with a litter of 8 puppies. Some were black and brown, some white and brown like Brenner, but he was the sleepiest and most cuddly one of the bunch. He was adopted from the Central Missouri Humane Society at 616 Big Bear Blvd on March 5th, 2014 by Megan Tipton and Alyssa Reynolds. The original plan was to adopt an adult dog who was house-trained already, but once they held Brenner in their arms, they knew he was theirs. He was originally named Broyls, but that was quickly corrected to Yul Brenner, and he would go by Brenner. His adoption papers signified ‘Pointer/Mix’ - one might say emphasis on the mix. Brenner was adopted for the handsome fee of $120.

Brenner lived at 1802 Quarry Park Drive with Megan and Lyss, another dog they informally adopted named Retta, and eventually a third roommate named Mackenzie Sconce. Brenner and Retta enjoyed many muddy trips to the dog park and an adoring fan base of Mizzou students and alum. Brenner and Retta slept each night in a twin bed with Megan, which they mostly took up. They had a simple life but were loved to pieces. Brenner and Retta also had a number of field trips to Alyssa’s folks’ property in Portland, Missouri where they could run free with Hank and Walter.

In the summer of 2015, Brenner moved with Megan to Portland, Maine. It was a tearful goodbye with Lyss. There was an agreement made between Lyss and Meg moments before signing the adoption papers that one of them needed to keep Brenner when they no longer lived together, and Meg said quickly she would. 1 which was a very bold promise for a part time grocery clerk. Moving to New England was a big adjustment for Brenner who proved to have a phobia of snow, ice, and furry snow boots. He also missed Lyss and Retta greatly.

That said, Brenner had frequent Missouri visitors. He was known for his demonstrative displays of affection when reunited with a fellow Missourian family member, including wallering, kisses on the face, and placing a paw upon the shoulder. The whole greeting could take more than 15 minutes.

Brenner lived with many more dog and human roommates and was noted by all for his sweet and loving nature. He was a sensitive creature who both loved tenderly and specifically and would react strongly with fear or indignation at times as well. Brenner often made the day of strangers on daily walks when he would approach someone. He didn’t offer this to everyone, just the specific people of his choosing. When he lived next to the hospital, it was not uncommon for him to gently approach someone on a hospital bench outside who was grieving a loss or pain in their life. Brenner was a foodie and often barked at his dry dog food until an offering was made to assuage his tastes - some fat, some soup, some eggs. Brenner enjoyed a good slice of pie every now and again. He went on many runs around Portland and hikes in the area before a patellar luxation put him out of commission for more rigorous activities, and from then on he stuck to local walks in the city, beach, trails or nature preserve.

In 2017, Brenner met his future dad, Ben Lufuta. They had a loving relationship, and Brenner appreciated Ben’s calm and steady manner. There is some question whether Brenner ultimately forgave Ben for displacing him from sleeping in bed with Meg after Ben and Meg got married on January 15th 2022.

In March of 2023, Brenner helped welcome home Kimya Rolland Lufuta. Brenner was not overly enthusiastic about the addition, but Kimya thought Brenner was not only interesting, but hilarious. Which he was.

What a blessing from God: Brenner also had a last reunion with Lyss in September of 2023.

Brenner is missed by all who loved him. He brought tender love, humor, vexation, comfort, and routine to our days. He leaves a hole in our hearts where he won our affections so completely. Rest in peace, dear Brenner boy.
