Brenda's obituary
Brenda believed her most important calling was her role as a mother. She was the beloved mother of three—Angela, Michael and Christian—teaching them the love of Jesus, sharing her love of the beach, making birthday cakes, sewing countless costumes and Easter outfits and planning special occasions.
Brenda often viewed life through the lens of a camera, documenting memories and treasured sunsets in her albums. She achieved every goal she set for herself—from completing nursing school, to traveling to all 50 states, Canada, Europe and the Holy Land. This same tenacity drove her to fight brain cancer for almost three years with the determination to stay active & spend time with her family, especially her 9 cherished grandchildren.
Brenda is preceded in death by her father Johney Rathel; Grandmother Alvester Ray; Uncle Al Wilson; and dear friend Inez Pritchard. Brenda will be forever loved and remembered by her mother Betty Rathel: sisters Sharon (Jim) New and Juanita (Chuck) Sheppard; brother Wayne (Donna) Rathel; children Angela (Hank) Magruder, Mike Weeks and Christian (Kevin) Thomas; grandchildren Cassidy and Mike Weeks, Sam Carryer, Phoebe and Jack Magruder, Kavin, Colby, Kacee, and Anna Thomas; Aunt Ida Wilson; Cousins Lorraine Hartley Harrison, Sandra Smith (Wilson), Ben and Darlene Wilson; Nieces Melissa Wells (Rathel), Amy Isham (Rathel), Laurie Lancaster (New), Kimberly Sheppard, Karie Payne (Sheppard); Nephews Scott New, John Rathel and Kevin Sheppard; countless dear friends and church family members.
On Saturday, December 8,2018, Brenda's husband and children invite you to visit with them between 10 and 11 am and join in a "Celebration of Life" service beginning at 11 am. The visitation and service will be held at Eastside Baptist Church 1318 E. Calhoun St. Plant City, FL 33563.
Brenda was a nurse for 47 years and wished to help with fighting brain cancer. She elected to make an anatomical donation to University of Central Florida Medical School. The family has honored her wishes and made such donation in honor of Brenda's neurosurgeon, Dr. Raul Olivera. Preparation and transport were graciously provided by Dobies Funeral Home and Florida First Call Removal Service, LLC, respectively. Brenda's remains will later be placed in Florida National Cemetary next to her veteran husband's reserved space.
