Brenda's obituary
Brenda Sue Brown Robertson passed away Sunday, May 1, 2022 in Roanoke, Virginia at age 73, with her closest family by her side.
Brenda was born January 22, 1949, in Roanoke, VA to Garland and Melva Brown. She was the middle of nine children.
She graduated from Jefferson High School. Brenda was a hard worker and held many jobs as a single mom and helping provide for her parents as their health declined. In 1990, she married Gary William Robertson, originally of Craig County, for a short but happy five years before he passed away with immediate family at his side.
Brenda spent her life being the best mom possible, bringing up her daughter with a strength of character rarely seen. She served as room mother year after year, on PTA boards, and surrogate mother to many of her daughter’s friends, all while working multiple jobs.
Late in life, she finally got to live out a dream and moved with her daughter and then son-in-law, Andrew Johnson, to Myrtle Beach. Hating the thought of anyone going hungry, she volunteered at senior centers and once back in Virginia, at local food banks. She even saved a stranger’s life when she found him laying in his yard from a heart attack.
She lived with her daughter, daughter’s fiancé and his two boys for years as her health declined. Several years later, her soon to be son-in-law, John Thrush, would save her life when she had a heart attack. Eventually she required more care and moved to Richfield long term care facility for the last several years. Her personality drew many staff and residents close and she loved them.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and several siblings.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Debbie Johnson, soon to be son-in-law John Thrush and his boys, Grayson and Gabriel, whom she loved as her grand-babies, as well as her beloved niece Stacey Amos, several siblings, and extended family.
Her legacy is loving others and living as the example that loving another is more than words, it is shown by your every action.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to SW Virginia Food Bank, a charity close to her heart.
