Breene's obituary

Senator Harimoto was a lifelong resident of his district. He was a graduate of Waipahu High School and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He was a former information technology professional; a long-time community volunteer; a co-founder of the Pearl City Foundation; and Executive Director of the Momilani Community Center.

Senator Harimoto was a member of the Board of Education for eight years and served two terms as its chairman. He also served on the Honolulu City Council for four years. During his time on the City Council, he was the chair of the Committee on Transportation where he championed rail, transit-oriented development, complete streets, smart growth, and health and safety issues.
In 2014, Senator Harimoto was elected to the State Senate and served the residents of District 16 – Pearl City, Momilani, Pearlridge, ‘Aiea, Royal Summit, ‘Aiea Heights, Newtown, Waimalu, Hālawa and Pearl Harbor for six years.

He served as the vice chair of the Transportation Committee, and was a member of the Public Safety, Intergovernmental, and Military Affairs Committee, and the Ways and Means Committee. He was the Senate’s representative and chair of the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization Policy Board, as well as the Senate’s alternate representative on the Hawaiʻi Interagency Council for Transit-Oriented Development and Hawaiʻi Interagency Council on Homelessness.
On June 18, 2020, Senator Harimoto passed away after his long battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; sons Kevin, Kasey and Kerry; and grandchildren Hailey, Hiro and Harper.
