Brainard trained me as a mental health counselor and was a great friend to me for over 20 years. To his sons, he spoke of you three often and about how much he loved you and was so proud of each of you. Love, Heather Safer

I knew Brainard as a forensic colleague, therapist and friend for 40 years. His heart was huge, his clinical skills unmatched. His professional work saved and helped so many lives.

He helped change my life forever.  He will always be in my heart and I feel blessed to have met him . RIP my friend..

Such a brilliant mind and person I came to know and truly love and appreciate.  I met Dr. Hines in a professional setting but he became part of my most treasured inner circle. He taught me without condescension and lovingly explained "me" to me!   I am forever grateful for his words of wisdom, his genuine kindness and his heartfelt empathy.  Dr. Hines is so deeply missed in my life but he will most certainly never be forgotten.  My condolences go out to his family and all are in my prayers.

From the moment we met Brainard, through Maria at UM, we knew we were in for a unique experience in the years to come.  A very impressive and genuine man.   Our sympathies to the family, you are always in our thoughts and prayers.  Love, Judy and Paul

Brainard, I will miss you! You’ve created such beautiful family memories by welcoming all of us into your home with love, care, and incredible hospitality. Your thoughtful menus, stunning presentations, and unforgettable flavors always made each gathering feel special.

Thanksgiving with you will always be a memory I treasure deeply—thank you for making everyone feel seen, loved, and so well taken care of.

Such a loving, funny, and insightful tribute to our friend and fellow doctoral student.  Brainard was an interesting fellow, driven by his own North Star. It appears he experienced a life well lived, shared the love of a wonderful woman, and helped to produce an amazing family.  I’m sorry I did not get reacquainted with him when we both had returned to Gainesville in our retirement. May he rest in peace.
