Bob's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Pace, 70, who died after a sudden medical emergency at 4:20 p.m. on July 12th, 2023. Willie Nelson’s “Roll Me Up & Smoke Me When I Die” was playing during his final moments—something that no doubt would have brought a smile to his face.
Born on September 11, 1952, Bob lived a vibrant life for more than seven decades, enriching those around him in countless ways. Bob grew up in Northeast Heights, Albuquerque, as an Air Force brat, attending Cleveland Middle School and Del Norte High School. He moved to Taos as a young adult, where he worked as a dental hygienist and a general contractor. He was a talented builder and craftsman who enjoyed improving his property, lovingly named Shangri-La, where he welcomed people with open arms.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Adeliza Backus-Pace; his father, Ed Pace; his twin sisters, Lindy (Bart) Jones and Cindy (Scott) Wagoner; and many loving cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Myra Pace, who passed away in 2015.
Bob was one of a kind. Friends and family loved him for his irreverent sense of humor and his big heart, wide grin, and contagious laugh.
He had an adventurous spirit, and, depending on the time of year, you might find him ripping down black diamonds at Taos Ski Valley, playing gigs or enjoying jam sessions with his many musical friends, hiking or camping, working on his property, or sailing. He explored South America, Mexico, and many other places throughout his life, but he had a special love for San Carlos, Mexico, where he recently spent many of his days sailing on his ketch in the bay with friends, enjoying the sea and sun.
Bob lived life to the fullest, and he left us with some valuable lessons. He believed in having fun, taking risks, and sharing joy with others. He showed us that life is precious, and we should make the most of it every day. As he wrote in the last words of his will, "My life has been magic."
We can honor Bob's legacy by living life to the fullest with the same enthusiasm and joy that he did. Let's enjoy time with our friends and loved ones while we can, listen to and make great music, go on adventures of our own, and make memories that will make us laugh until we cry.
