Bill's obituary
William Samuel Engreve Craig passed away at his home in Deer Trail, Colorado on November 9th, 2024. Bill was born January 29th, 1951, to Joseph Craig and Marion Craig (née Peacock) of Hagerstown, Maryland. He attended Boonsboro High School and went on to attend the University of Maryland, where he pledged Sigma Chi fraternity (and occasionally studied). After graduating with his undergraduate degree, he moved to Colorado, where he went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Colorado and completed doctoral coursework at the University of Denver. While in Denver, Bill met his former spouse, Pamela Craig, with whom he had two children, Dylan and Lauren. He lived in Colorado for the rest of his life.
He worked for many years at the Colorado Department of Labor as a statistician and later did statistical engineering for government contractors. After retiring, Bill went on to spend his time volunteering as a prison chaplain in detention centers, becoming an amateur solar energy expert, and befriending just about every person he met out in the rural community in which he lived. He was also a gun enthusiast and a gun safety instructor.
Bill traveled to many places, living on a kibbutz in Israel, vacationing in Greece, serving on a mission trip to Mexico City, and exploring the American National Parks in Wyoming and Montana with his family. He enjoyed camping and fishing in Colorado, and particularly loved visiting Loch Lomond with his son. He was an avid photographer and captured many of his favorite moments from these trips on film. He was an animal lover, regaling many with stories of his beloved German Shepherd, Sam, and terrifying others with stories of his African Rock Python, Princess. And for the last several years of his life, he found deep joy in spending time at his home with his “working cats.”
He was a funny, unique, friendly, and faithful person. Bill had more stories than any person I’ve ever met, and I bet every person who met him has a story about Bill. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marion, and his son, Dylan Samuel. He is survived by his daughter Lauren (Josh) Romero, brother Joseph Craig, sister Helen (Steve) Kotch, nieces, nephews, and a host of long-time friends.
