My  team and I from 'Wildstar Films' spent a month with Billy and crew onboard the Pukuk in June 2021 filming bears in Katmai NP. We had the most amazing time and Billy was one of those special people that you take deep into your heart and keep there forever. He was so much fun to be around; a 'yes' man with a positive outlook and a solution to every problem. An amazing human being. His outlook on life touched me deeply and I still find myself asking ''what would Billy do/say in this situation''. He spoke with so much love about his daughter and granddaughter. The world will miss Billy deeply. I hope we'll meet again.
My first time working with Billy was is 2010 on the Pukuk. What a treat and experience to have him has our skipper! It kicked off a long-term working relationship but also much more. Billy and I texted while we both went through cancer treatments and the ups and downs. He sent me updates on his beautiful granddaughter, which showed how much he loved her. He was just an awesome human being, and he is missed so much. Sending all his family and friends love during these difficult times.

Billy Choate held a special place in my life, remembering small town Kenai when we grew up there. His ability to recall people and places and connections, especially in Old Town filled so many gaps in my childhood perceptions. He was just enough older that he had a keen understanding of the social landscape. And his memory for details was unsurpassed. What a great story he would tell.

In these later years when we often walked together at SPARC on winter mornings the two of us would spin a litany of old friends and crazy happenings. Billy grew up living between Homer, Kenai and Seward. He called his childhood ‘feral,’ yet look at all he managed to create in his life.
