Background
Betty's Bookshelf: A Fund for Literacy
Supporting Lake County Literacy Coalition (LCLC)
My grandmother, Betty Joan Zemansky, was an avid reader. Some of my earliest memories of her are of us sitting together while she devoured her favorite murder mysteries and thrillers. She had a passion for reading that was hard to match—so much so that she couldn’t put a book down until she finished it. As I’ve grown, I’ve realized how much that love of books shaped me, my cousin, and my children. We share that same enthusiasm for reading, and it's something we carry forward in our lives.
My grandmother’s love of reading didn’t just entertain her—it shaped her, and by extension, it shaped all of us who loved her. In her memory, we are establishing the Betty's Bookshelf: A Fund for Literacy to support the Lake County Literacy Coalition (LCLC), a nonprofit that helps adults and families in Lake County learn to read and enjoy books the way my grandmother did.
The funds raised will directly support the Adult and Family Literacy Program of the Lake County Library, offering others the opportunity to experience the joy, knowledge, and fulfillment that reading brings. In doing so, we hope to carry on my grandmother's legacy, helping others develop the same deep love for reading that enriched her life—and ours.
Your support will help adults and families in Lake County have access to literacy programs, ensuring they can read, learn, and enjoy books for years to come, just as Betty did. Contribute
