1978, Pasadena, Md
Betty Jean was a big part of my life in 1978. I was in my senior year of high school and I was 4 months pregnant when I graduated. My father was a very old-fashioned man and kicked me out of the house when I told him. Betty Jean was by my side when I did. She tried to reason with my father but he wasn't having it. So she took me in to her home and I stayed with her through my pregnancy and after I had my son. My father finally forgave me and I ended up moving back in with them but if it weren't for Betty Jean I don't know what I would've done. I laugh when I remember the day I went into labor. I had quit smoking and it was very hard for me. But when I started having contractions I had come across this 9 month-old cigarette butt (yuck!) and decided I had to have it. She walked in and said "What are you doing??? I told her I was in labor and she said "You went 9 months without a cigarette and you pick NOW to smoke? Put that cigarette out!" I did and then we just started cracking up like neither one of us could believe I did that! She helped me so much as a young mother, she had my beautiful niece Gina 8 months before I had Brandon so I learned a lot from her. Gina I love you so much and I'm so proud of you! I'm so happy that you met your love David! You will always be a part of my life! I'm so so sorry for your loss. I know your Mom is in Heaven watching over you and will always be with you. Knowing her and my Mom shared the same name, Betty Jean Kelley, always fascinated me. I hope their together now talking about it 😊
