Betts's obituary
Betty “Betts” Leona Cline (Chase), age 85, passed away in her home on the evening of January 30, 2024, due to respiratory failure.
Betts was born in Hawthorne, California, on April 5th, 1938. Upon birth, Betts was faced with physical challenges and complications being born clubfoot. Doctors stated she may never walk, and she spent much of her time in the hospital, and lived in a wheelchair, and/or wore leg braces for much of her childhood. Defying the doctors, she learned to walk and lived her teen years much like many of her peers in the 1950s (roller skating, dances, etc.).
She grew up in Laguna Beach, CA, and enjoyed the beach life, especially swimming. Some of her fondest memories were swimming in the coves. She graduated high school from Laguna High in 1956. For a short while after school, she was a swim instructor.
In later years, she worked as a registered nurse, working odd hours at a local Thousand Oaks, CA hospital, all the while having four children in tow. Eventually, marriage took her out of California and into Oregon where she became a printing technician for Oregon City School District. After her children had moved on, she and her spouse hosted two high school exchange students, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Eventually, life took Betts to Astoria, OR, then to Ritter, OR, and after many years, to Yuma, AZ.
She loved to travel and the outdoors, hiking, camping, and fishing. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and baking. She was also very crafty and loved painting and participated in a weekly card-making group with her Yuma friends. She was a fantastic seamstress; when her children were young, she made baby doll and Barbie doll clothes, and matching Easter outfits. She made her youngest daughter’s prom dress and later in life made matching western wear and petticoat outfits for her and her husband’s square-dancing events.
In her later years, after moving to Yuma, AZ, she was involved in the local church and eventually belonged to a weekly bible study group with some local friends. She was always doing something with friends to keep herself busy.
She made friends easily and had friends in many different states across the country. She was caring, and thoughtful, and enjoyed talking with people and getting to know people from all over. She could be silly in the right situations, and serious when necessary. Most of all, she had a big heart and was easily loved by many. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Betts is preceded in death by her father James Leland Chase and her mother, Anna Mae Chase (Weaver), and is survived by her brother Ronald Robert Chase; her cousin, Bryan Weaver; her four children: Douglas Sherwood, Janice Boyd (Sherwood), Scott Sherwood, Brenna Hugger-Foster (Seldney); her five grandchildren; and her seven great-grandchildren.
Her internment will be at the Greenwood Columbarium in Astoria, OR in the weeks to follow. She will be placed next to her father, James Leland Chase in the niche. In lieu of flowers or a gift, please donate to your favorite charity of choice in her memory.
