Beryl's obituary
Beryl LaverneThompson Carter, born on April 9, 1942, departed from this world on April 11, 2025. A woman known for her wit, brutal honesty, determination, and a boundless love for life, Beryl will be lovingly remembered by everyone who knew her. Her strong personality and ceaseless determination made her a figure of inspiration in the lives she touched.
Beryl's lesson of life is to always do more and to learn everything you can. Beryl is a graduate of John M Gandy High School and a graduate of DC Teachers College . She also attended Virginia Union University and Virginia Commonwealth University. She was employed by the City of Richmond and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in their respective Human Resources Departments. Beryl was an active member of the community in retirement and a strong advocate of history, heritage, and literacy. She was a member of the Hanover County of Virginia Historical Committee. She served as Vice President of the Hanover County Black Heritage Society. She was a member of the One Voice Community Chorus - Richmond. Beryl enjoyed life with her love of bowling, gardening, and playing Pokeno with her college mates and friends. Weekend afternoons and evenings had her watching college and professional sports, her favorites being the Washington Commanders and the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Beryl is survived by her children, Camille Carter Atkins and Brian Carter, their spouses, Ernest P. Atkins, Jr., and Crystal Reeder, who will forever cherish the memories of their mother. Beryl is also survived by her two grandsons, Brandon and Christopher Atkins, and her two granddaughters, Cecille and Gabrielle Carter, who will always have their memories of their grandmother to cherish. Beryl was preceded in death by her loving husband, David N. Carter, of 59 years, her father, J. Conroy Thompson, and her mother, Ora Sizer Thompson.
Beryl leaves behind a legacy of enduring love amongst her two children and four grandchildren. Despite her bustling life, she always found time to spend with them, making sure they felt treasured and loved. The precious moments they shared with her will forever remain etched in their hearts. Her wisdom and knowledge will remain alive and will be passed down to future generations.
Apart from her family, Beryl will be missed dearly by Brownie, her beloved Chocolate Labrador. Their special bond was evident in the zaniness and comfort they provided each other.
As we bid farewell to Beryl, we remember a woman who lived life on her terms, loved without reservations, and inspired everyone with her spirited personality. She will be deeply missed, but her influence and love will continue to live in the hearts of those she left behind.
