Bert's obituary

Bert Helmut Lange, Jr., incredible dad, athlete, quick-witted, selflessly devoted husband,
and beautiful soul, died on Saturday, January 23, 2021.

A passion and love for all things athletic, Bert was an accomplished Track and Field athlete.
Running hurdles and sprints for Kutztown University, he was an All-American and five-time
PSAC champion. He graduated as the school-record holder in the 55m hurdles and in the top
three in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. He was inducted into the Kutztown Athletics Hall
of Fame in 2016.

After college you could find him running, mountain biking, and adventure racing at Blue Marsh
Lake in Reading, PA. He loved the outdoors and backpacking in the Catskill Mountains was his
favorite. After the birth of his children, he started road cycling. He could be found with a jogging
stroller or bike trailer, baby in tow sharing his love of outdoor activities with his kids.

Bert had a successful career in business with Office Depot, which he loved. He was an amazing
friend and mentor to many people. He coached youth soccer, participated with his children in
karate, and loved a super sandbag workout, which he frequently coached his family through,
even when their passion did not match his. Bert inspired everyone who knew him to move their
bodies and appreciate physical activity.

Bert was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 2013 after a year of symptoms. His
philosophy was “Life happens, it’s how you deal with the challenges that matter.” This positive
outlook and a lot of teamwork got his family through eight beautiful years of living life to the fullest. He
loved hard, spent countless hours with his wife Jennifer and children Sophia and Alex, checked off the family bucket list, and prepared his
children for what is important in this life. Bert was a bright light and a shining example of how to
live.

A selfless man, who spent every day focused on his children and making sure they would be
prepared for the future. He did not let ALS stop him, using his eye gaze computer he ran the
household, parented, kept in touch with friends and family, and participated actively in life.
Bert was a Foo Fighter’s fan. He was able to share this love with Sophia and Alex, taking them
to the 20th Anniversary Celebration at Washington D.C.’s RFK Stadium on the 4th of July. He
loved roller coasters and was able to spend time with his children at many parks experiencing
the thrill rides. Bert loved sushi, grilling, Old Bay, and Bloody Mary’s. He loved animals,
especially his Australian Shepherds. Bert had a quick-witted sense of humor and he made his family
laugh every day.

Bert was one-of-a-kind, he was humble, kind, adventurous, and funny. He loved his family hard,
he was a good friend, and he inspired a whole lot of people to see what is important, achieve
their dreams, overcome obstacles, and always find the positive.

Bert is predeceased by his grandparents and Uncle Johnny Gentile. He is survived by his wife,
Jennifer (Johnson) Lange; his two children, Sophia and Alex; his dog Buster; his parents
