Bernice's vibrant spirit and unyielding dedication were evident in her over 30-year career at Rikers Island Correctional Facility, where she worked tirelessly to make a difference. Beyond her professional life, Bernice had a passion for discovering treasures in thrift shops and enjoyed the enchanting atmosphere of renaissance fairs and enjoying family meals at one of her favorite dining destinations, a good ole’ Chinese Buffet. Her love for music was reflected in some of her favorite songs such as, "No One" by Alicia Keys and "I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack.
Bernice's family was the heart of her life. She is survived by her four children: Genette Willis, Christopher Willis, Wilfred Astacio, and Jonathan Astacio. Some of her playful phrases like "Baby cry" and "Ballin'" will echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A celebration of Bernice's life will be held at Calverton Memorial Cemetery on June 21, 2024 at 11:00am. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Bernice are invited to attend.
