Bernard's obituary
Bernard Leslie Downie, 73, went to be with the Lord on February 27, 2021. Born on April 12, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, Bernie later lived in Sharon, Pennsylvania; Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania; and most recently Valrico, Florida.
Bernie was a devoted father, a faithful husband of 47 years, and a man of deep and abiding faith. His Christian faith was the foundation of his life, guiding him with strength, humility, and kindness in all that he did. Bernie lived a life filled with laughter, love, and endless smiles. The ability to find joy in every situation was a gift to all who knew him.
Bernie found great joy in God’s simple blessings — watching sports, collecting baseball cards, spending treasured time with his family, and caring for any stray critter that made its way to his doorstep. After moving to Florida, he became a loyal fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Rays. Whether cheering during a game or sharing stories with those he loved, Bernie brought warmth, laughter, and light wherever he was.
Bernie attended New Castle Business College and built a long-standing career with Cracker Barrel, where he had the opportunity to travel throughout the United States opening new stores and training new employees. He viewed his work as more than a job — it was an opportunity to mentor others, build lasting relationships, and live out his faith through integrity and servant leadership.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene (Lellock) Downie; son Jeffrey Laska and his wife Melody; daughter Dana (Laska) Vincent and her husband Eric Vincent; son Joshua Downie and his cherished granddaughters Kayla and Lauren Vincent.
He is preceded in passing by his parents, James and Lorraine (Townsend) Downie; brothers, Thomas, Jack and James “Babe” Downie; sisters Patricia Gabriel and Shirley Wooddell.
While his family grieves his earthly absence, they rejoice in the promise of eternal life and the assurance that Bernie now rests in the arms of his Savior. His love, laughter, and steadfast faith will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know him. His greatest legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the countless hearts he touched with kindness.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
