Ben's obituary

Ben Kevin Miehe, 74, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024. Born on January 28, 1950, in Anamosa, Iowa, Ben was the son of the late Carmen Ingwersen Miehe and Raymond G. Miehe.

Ben was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was dedicated, hard-working, and lived a life of integrity. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1972 and became an architect shortly thereafter. Ben spent the majority of his career with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) and spent over a decade at the College of Charleston as a staff architect.

Throughout his career, he worked on multiple side projects through a moonlighting business and cultivated a niche in historic preservation. His designs can be found all over Lowcountry, from churches to businesses and residential homes, a legacy his family and community will cherish for years to come.

When Ben wasn’t designing buildings, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of semi-retirement, like taking day trips with his wife Jenny to observe nature, birdwatch, and try new restaurants. He always looked forward to Saturday breakfasts with his comrades in the Porsche Club of Charleston.

Ben loved cars, his dog Augie, and above all, his family. Becoming “Papa” to his four grandkids brought him so much joy in the past few years.

Ben is survived by his wife, Jenny Miehe; son, Phillip Miehe (Megan Miehe); daughters, Jessica Gentry (John Gentry) and Alexa Davidson (Brandon Davidson); grandchildren: Maxwell Miehe, Hammy Miehe, Margaret Gentry, and Jack Gentry; and brothers, Bill Miehe and Bruce Miehe.

The Celebration of Ben’s life will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, August 15 at Founders Hall at Charles Towne Landing, 1500 Old Towne Road, Charleston, SC 29407.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Lung Association (lung.org) or the National Parks Conversation Association (npca.org).
