Ben's obituary

Ben Houg, who left us on July 20, 2023. Ben lived a life full of promise cut short too soon. He was a remarkable individual whose sincere kindness touched all who knew him.

Benjamin Allan Houg, born on December 19, 1992, to Marc and Janece Houg, was the youngest of four siblings. Ben's childhood was marked by a strong bond with his brother Dustin and sisters Rebecca and Marjorie. Together, they grew up on the family homestead south of Philipsburg, MT, where every day was an adventure. Ben attended the Philipsburg Public Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 2011.

Part of Ben’s adventurous side included football. Ben lettered in football from 2008 to 2011, playing as a Class C All-Star. In 2009-2010, Ben achieved All-Conference 3rd team Tight-End. Ben also loved snowboarding and took every opportunity to shred Discovery Ski Basin.

Ben had big dreams for his future, planning to attend college and become a pilot after graduation. However, on September 17, 2010, his life took an unexpected turn. The Granite Prospector Football team traveled to Lincoln to play the Lincoln Lynx; near the end of the first quarter, Ben, playing defensive end, stumbled off the field and collapsed on the sidelines. In a matter of moments, his life was hanging in the balance. Thanks to the swift actions of Ben’s Coaches, Parents, and Lincoln’s Ambulance crew, he was rushed to Clearwater Junction, where the ambulance was met by life flight, and Ben was flown to St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula. It was there that the extent of his injuries was revealed-a burst artery in his brain. Within minutes of arriving at St. Pat’s, Ben was in surgery, his life forever altered by this life-changing event.

We remember Ben as a beacon of light, bringing warmth and comfort to those around him. His spirit and memory live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. As we mourn the loss of this exceptional soul, we also celebrate the joy and love he brought into the world. May his memory serve as a lasting comfort.
