Bayard's obituary
Always friendly, always leaving you with a good laugh, he will be sorely missed by many.
BG was born March 23, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri and relocated to Louisville, Kentucky in 1966. He was well traveled and at one time lived in Elsah, Illinois, Columbus, Ohio, and Asheville North Carolina.
He was a Navy veteran 1942 -1947 where he learned the joy of cooking, feeding thousands of sailors his favorite recipe of S.O.S. He worked in several area restaurants in Louisville as a chef and received his bachelor’s degree from Murray State University. He taught high school classes in restaurant management at local Louisville schools, Ahrens Trade and Pleasure Ridge Park where he set up the initial culinary program. He also taught at Northwood Institute in French Lick, Indiana.
BG enjoyed playing the trombone while in the Navy, with a local big band in Louisville during the 1970s and in later years just for fun.
He worked for several summers as the food and beverage manager at the YMCA Camp Piomingo, where he perfected the recipe for bug juice, as well as inventing the renowned “Cook Shack” dance.
BG was the first chef in Kentucky to obtain both certifications of Certified Executive Chef and Certified Culinary Educator with the American Culinary Federation.
He loved fishing, photography, corny jokes, and food, not necessarily in that order.
He is survived by his four children:
Deborah Lynn Yocom and husband Bob
Constance Louis Klinzman
Cary Robert Shackelford and wife Jodi
Gail Elizabeth Shackelford
A sister Mary Virginia Morton and husband Howard
9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandsons, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and too many friends to mention.
Thank you to the staff at the Charles George VA Medical Center-Asheville, North Carolina. And very special thanks to Sarah O Ware for her love, care, and support for BG and his children.
A celebration of life for close family and friends will be held August 11, 2018, at Nolin Lake, Kentucky, where he enjoyed camping and fishing. Time and place to be announced.
