Basia's obituary

Basia (Barbara) Wozniak (Nedzynski), 76, of Troy, New York passed away on June 2, 2024. Born on April 23,1948 in Goraj, Poland, she was the beloved daughter of Czesław & Waleria Nedzynski.

In December 1970 Basia wed Janusz Wozniak, and together they created a family of three sons, Piotr, Mirosław & Jacek, and several rescue dogs. In 1985, Basia immigrated to Italy with her youngest son Jacek. While there, she had the opportunity to visit the Vatican and have a personal meeting with Pope John Paul II. She was deeply honored to have met the Pope and have her youngest son personally blessed by him. In 1987, Basia and Jacek moved to Syracuse, NY and in 1988, they settled in Troy, NY, where Basia lived for the rest of her life. She spent many years working for the William Leahy Funeral Home and worked for over 30 years in the resident dining halls of RPI. She thought of herself as a mom to all her students at RPI, and they referred to her as “Mama Basia.” Her work and interaction with the students of RPI filled her heart with love and joy.

On the day of Basia’s birth, her mother spent the day tending to her garden. Basia would go on to have a green thumb all her life and develop a deep love for her garden and plants. She would often share her plants with her friends and family as a representation of her generous and nurturing nature and she was known to say, “We have to speak lovingly to the plants and thank them.” Basia’s love and big heart extended well beyond her garden. She was known for having a welcoming home, always filled with warmth, affection and her furry friends.

Basia is survived by her mother Waleria, and her loving sons and daughters-in-law Piotr Wozniak (Buffy Owens) of Troy, NY, Mirosław Wozniak (Anna) of Lubin, Poland, and Jacek Wozniak (Gina) of Latham, NY. One of Basia’s great joys in life was her grandchildren, Mateusz & Patryk Wozniak of Lubin, Poland and Leo & Tess Wozniak of Latham, NY. She is also survived by her sister Anna Omiotek, brothers Gregory Nedzynski (Anna) and Dariusz Nedzynski (Bozena), and her loving nieces and nephew Renata Nedzynski, Ewa Nedzynski, Kinga Omiotek. Basia also leaves behind her cherished cousins Tomasz Kaznowski (Irmina) and Iwona Bystryk (Tadeusz). She is predeceased by her father Czesław and husband Janusz.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the William Leahy Funeral Home on Sunday June 9, 2024 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday June 10, 2024 at 9:30 AM at the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel at Oakwood Cemetery with Father John Tallman officiating.
