Barry's obituary
Barry L Van Hook, 82 of Mesa, Arizona passed away October 2, 2024. Barry was born in Peoria, Illinois, on August 17, 1942, the son of Betty Cumming Milashoski and Lyle Van Hook. A graduate of East Peoria Community High School, he was a proud US Army veteran, serving 3 years, including 1 year in Southeast Asia. Following an honorable discharge, he graduated from Illinois State University and Northern Illinois University, where he earned a doctoral degree from the business school in 1973. He moved to Arizona in 1976 and spent 30 years as a professor of entrepreneurship and small business in the W.P. Carey School of Business, retiring from that position in 2006. During his retirement years, Barry enjoyed spending time with his family, attending grandkids’ sporting events, traveling when forced, and collecting deco-era antiques, vintage cars and Harley Davidsons. He gained great friendships through his various collections.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Kenneth and Dennis. He is survived by the love of his life, his cherished wife Corliss Ventura Ditton, his beloved daughter, Lindsay Barnes (Jeffrey) and stepson Lucas Ventura (Lindsey), grandchildren Connor, Bear, Jackson, Ava and Niko, and sister Karen Wheadon (Dave). Barry was a fierce protector of his family and dearly loved by all. He will be greatly missed.
Cremation rites have been accorded and services will take place at a later date in Arizona. Memorial contributions may be made in Barry’s name to the Arizona Humane Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.
