When Diane & I were staying at G & G's house we slept in extra bedroom with closet running under the stairs. There was an upright piano on that wall and when he was headed upstairs to his own room, he would open our door, yell "There's a boogeyman behind the piano!", then slam our door (which popped open the closet door!), and run upstairs to his own room laughing the whole way! Loved scaring us and we loved being scared!!

My deepest sympathies to you Francie & families in the loss of Barry. Wonderful pictures of great memories to have and hold in your heart forever. He certainly enjoyed life to the fullest but I know it’s never enough time with our loved one. I was sad to hear of his passing and wish I had known about his service. Prayers for comfort for you and your families.
I am posting this for Barry’s niece Janie.

It was probably 1972? Dad and I met Barry and Grandma at the State Fair. We walked around looking at the machinery and livestock. Grandma and I of course went to the flower exhibit building. Barry offered to take me on some rides knowing that since I was a kid that's what I would enjoy and of course he did too. Well as we were leaving the fair, Barry looked over and saw a paging booth,Pages for 50 cents. Dad and Grandma were walking in front of us visiting, so Barry hands me 50 cents and whispers "go tell you dad to go home".
So I quickly, without them noticing ran over to the booth, nervously told the lady and ran back to the group. Just then over the loud speaker for All to hear at the fair came "Would Aubrey Schlotzhauer Please Go Home"
Dad, surprised, looks around like what?? and then sees Barry and I laughing so hard and he knew he'd been had.
They then repeated it. All of us were laughing so hard! Grandma had tears in eyes from laughing so hard.
Dad mentioned it about every year around the state fair time - how his brother got a good one on him! It always made him smile to remember it.

Your dad had such pride and happiness in you boys and family. I never talked to him that he didn't run down the list of what everyone was doing.
Not only was he my cool Uncle that I looked up to when I was young but he encouraged me to try new things all my life and its a great thing for someone to encourage others. That's part of what made him so great.

With Deepest Sympathy,
Janie

I remember starting back in Cub Scouts when Jeff and my son Alex we did day camp Cub Scouts Anytime you needed help there was Berry as the years progressed the kids still were attracted to Barry, he was approachable and just all in all a good leader and confidant I will miss him and I know many others lives that were all affected by Barry will miss him as well.

It was the first time I seen Barry. My best friend's dad. I was in boy scouts with Chris. Later in school with him. It was the morning of Christmas. the night before we all gathered as a family. We all had a celebration where there was plenty of sweets and food. My mother was a type one diabetic. As threw the night like normally during the holiday season people snacked. So did she. The next morning I woke up. As I have several years in the past. I always peeked on the presents. This morning was different however. As soon as I got out to the Livingroom. I herd my father yell my mothers name several times. Steph! Steph! Hunny! I ran back to see what was going on. He (my father) turned to me and said "CALL THE NIEGHBOR GEORGE! George was a retired firefighter. He worked at the same fire house Barry did. He also knew Barry. George come over and tried to wake my mother up. Then called the fire department. Barry was the first one on the scene. At this age everything is still a little blurry. If I remember right. Barry showed up and in my head. All I seen was a tall firefighter with bags and everything on. My eyes automatically went to watching him. He pulled out a blood sugar kit and tested her blood sugar. I seen intravenous Bags come out. An (IV) was started. Now at this time. My grandma showed up. She packed me and my brother up and took us to her house for the rest of the morning. A few years pass by and I go over to spend the night over at my friend Chris's house. I as I walked in I noticed Barry. Recognizing him I asked Chris. "What does your dad do? He looks familiar. He replies "He's a firefighter. That's when I knew. Barry was the one ( I like to call him the angel) who saved my mom. My heart goes out to my bestfriend and his family. I hope this story gives you all just a little comfort.

Barry was such a likable guy. The memories I have of him on the swim team float trips bring a smile to my face every time. I can't help but think this is just the next journey in his adventurous life. I pray God comforts you though this time.

Remember Berry from Eastwood Hills and Raytown High School would. Would be there except for a broken ankle.
My deepest condolences for your families loss. We are praying for you all in your time of grief. May you find peace in knowing he is in the Heavens flying around and free.
Francie, I was so sad to learn of the passing of your husband. His obituary is so full of the wonderful life you two had. I pray you feel God’s arms surround you.

Rest In Peace, Barry.
