Barbara's obituary
Barbara Kim Phillips, 61, of Bakersfield, passed away unexpectedly on January 13th, 2022, due to complications from a stroke. Barbara was born in Seattle, Washington, and spent the last 30 years or so in Oildale, North of the river, where she was well known and respected. She loved the community there and had many friends that were more like family. She also loved music and games, and had quite a few hobbies - beading, calligraphy, and collecting her favorite quotes - she also had a thing for fedora hats. Barbara was mother to 5 biological children, and countless "street kids" - children in the neighborhood who called her Mom - whether or not they had their own mother's at home. Mom will be dearly missed and always remembered.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Jake Stype, her grandson, James Lee Franshier, her sister, Juanita Lynn Jones, and her parents, Lola Slocum, and Daniel Phillips. She is survived by her brothers, David Walden, Jack Sandlin, and William Phillips. Her children, Jessica Ysidron, Joshua Davis, Daniel Ruiz, Tory Baxter, Manuel Ruiz, Jr., Patricia Crocker, and Sommer Nichols, and 20 grandchildren. Barbara requested a celebration of life be held in her honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. We request all of Barbara’s loved one's to join us in celebrating their beautiful life at Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Street, Bakersfield, on Friday, March 25th, 2022, at 10:00 am.
