Barbara's obituary

Barbara Grace MacKenzie (nee Ball)

March 31, 1943 – July 19, 2022

Barb was born in Comox Hospital and attended schools in Royston, Cumberland and Courtenay. She played ball in school and played a mean piano. As a youngster the family lived for a short time on Quadra Island where Barb really got involved in camping and loved it. After high school graduation she attended Sprott-Shaw Business College in Victoria.

On June 1, 1963 she married the love of her life, Dan MacKenzie. He was in the RCMP and they were posted to several areas of Canada including Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Frobisher Bay (Iqaluit) and Peace River. They settled in Armstrong BC and Barb owned and lovingly managed a small café, “The Donut Hut” for a number of years. After Dan’s retirement, they moved back to the Comox Valley. Barb enjoyed volunteering, making up grocery orders for Thrifty Foods, bowling with handicapped adults and loved working in her garden. She and Dan loved to travel and enjoyed many cruises and holidays in Hawaii, Italy, France, the UK and several trips to the US.  Barb loved organizing the sisters-cousins-daughters adventures together over the past 20 years.

Barb was predeceased by her husband Dan in March 2022 and by her parents, Leslie Albert Ball in 2001 and Rosina Ball (nee DeConink) in 2010. She is sadly missed by her daughter Leslie MacKenzie (Mike Burrows) and son Leigh MacKenzie (Cindi) and her 6 grandsons: Tylor (Karin), Liam, Travis, Declan, Dominic and Hammond. She also is missed by her 2 great grandchildren Riley and Erynn. Barb is mourned by her two sisters, Marilyn Clements (Mike Benson) and Pamela Wylie (Vivian) and will be missed by sister-in-law Donna Northrup (Ray) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life for Barb will be held on Saturday, October 1, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Room, Florence Filberg Centre, 411 Anderton Avenue in Courtenay, BC.  In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC or the Views at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox.

The family would like to thank the staff at both Dufferin Place in Nanaimo and the Views in Comox for their compassionate, loving care to both Barb and all her family.
