Barbara's obituary
Barbara (Brandt) Green, 84, long time Arizona resident, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 12, 2018. Barbara was born on December 10, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John H. Brandt and Helen M. Gundaker.
Her varied childhood homes landed her in many interesting places, but her touchstone was the beloved family summer cottage on Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
Barbara graduated from University of Illinois with a B.A. in Art Education and a minor in English. She went on to teach Art and English for several years in Harvard, Illinois where she met her husband Ellis Austin Green.
When Ellis received a job transfer back to his home state of Kentucky, he and Barbara were able to realize their dreams of owning a farm and starting a family. They didn't imagine that they would soon experience God's transforming power and discover that He would plant an even greater dream in their hearts: sharing His Good News to whoever He would lead them to. This calling brought them to Arizona in 1974 where they served alongside their Navajo brothers and sisters in Christ. They faithfully continued to work in ministry, touching many lives, until health reasons in 2008 caused them to move closer to family. Barbara had a deep love and appreciation for all people groups and cultures, but the Diné - the Navajo - always held a most cherished place in her heart.
Barbara was passionate about so many things. She was an adventurer who loved gardening, archaeology, history, native cultures, animals, and books but most of all she loved people. She was an ardent soul winner with a soft heart for anyone who was lonely or labeled an outcast. To the very end, Barbara was faithful to point everyone she encountered towards Christ.
Barbara is survived by husband, Ellis and her children: John Green, Julianne (Webb) Stewart, Paul (Cherry) Green, Amy Green, Matthew Green and Rebecca Green; as well as her grandchildren: Ryan (Alicia) Green, Rachel Green, Weslee Green, Abigail (Calvin) Robertson, Nathan Green, Blythe Green and Chloe Stewart. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Joan (Brandt) Martin.
Barbara will be interred at the Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery at Camp Navajo outside of Flagstaff, AZ. According to her wishes, a small family gathering will be held to remember her.
Because of Barbara's great love of missions and spreading the gospel, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions in her honor to That None Should Perish, www.tnsp.us, the missions organization with which her son Matthew serves. Please note on the donation that it is in Barbara's honor.
